Unknown noise from front of Focus 1.6 TDCI

Featured Replies

Hi, new to the forum and the website. I have a humming noise when driving over 55mph in a Focus TDCI 1.6 2014. A local mechanics garage can’t identify the source. At the moment they have advised allow it to get worse until it can be diagnosed.

its not the whee bearings, they have been checked, tyres are ok, whee alignment and balancing are ok and have been thoroughly checked, and checks for flaps or anything loose, no solutions so far.

turning the wheel doesnt make the noise louder or quieter.
it only happens above around 55mph, the noise sounds like a loud hum, with a slight vibration to it, and can be heard inside the cabin noticeably.

its every second or two when above that speed.

its a head scratcher at the moment.
the place i bought it from miles away, had booked me in to my local garage after offering to sort it free of charge as im still under a warranty.

but i wondered if a forum for ford owners may be able to help me.

regards

Vin

Have you checked the caliper sliders on the brakes it could be a sticking caliper.

Being a 1.6 TDCI there is a huge chance that the noise is caused by worn gearbox bearings. This is a well known problem of the 1.6 TDCI with 6-Speed Ford/Getrag B6 gearbox.

The high torque at low RPM's make people drive at low RPM's in high gears. The lubrication of the upper bearings inside the gearbox is based on splash lubrication. The upper bearings are located above the oil level. Oil is splashed upwards by the gears. A small channel collects the splashing oil and feeds the oil into the bearings. When driving at low RPM's for an extended period there is insufficient splash lubrication. This results in excessive wear and eventually premature failure of the upper bearings.

Hey Vinnie, I am having a similar Issue with my 2014 fiesta. Question for you. Have you tried shifting to 'Neutral" while driving and see if the noise goes away? Shift back to "Drive". Does the noise comes back? This is what I've notice on mine. Maybe a bad ball bearing inside transmission.

Hi, so the symptoms so far are

* ive heard it when i take my foot off the acceleration

* ive heard it when ive quickly switched to neutral whilst at 65mph on a straight section in a quiet lane.

* it definitely only kicks in at high gear and over 60mph ish and gets louder still at 65 to 70

Thanks for the replies so far.

at the moment the wheel bearings, alignment, balancing, tyres (new), brake discs and pads (new) are all OK according to the garage i took it to.

Havent had the car long at all, and the dealer had agreed to have the noise looked into and got me booked in to the local garage to me.

I just need to figure out what it most likely is to be. As as it stands the garage have said to me that they recommend seeing if it gets worse to pin point it, and im thinking this because they aren't ford specialists maybe..

My friend who is a fully qualified mechanic but currently has had to close his garage due to personal issues has straight away messaged me and said it sounds like the bearings in the gearbox to him..

I’m having similar issues with my focus 2014 1.0 eco boost . Got it a week ago and no alarm bells . Lovely drive. Then noticed knocking noise when in gear and specifically when on the throttle raising speed . Uncle mechanic said gb bearings . Now started squeaking simultaneously. Stopped driving until seen too but very clueless as to what gone wrong 🤦🏻‍♂️
