Indiators click, but lights don't come on

Featured Replies

On my 2005 Fusion the indicators click when used both ways and the hazard is used, but no lights come on on the car or on the dashboard. Just wondering where the first place to look would be? Cheers.

check fuse 33.   7.5a firstly as thats the common side of the cluster indication lamps.

Then fuse 50  20a.

is the ilumination working on cluster, gear stick etc ? is so f33 will be ok

both indicators are swiched by a gem (general electric module) No 10 according to wiring diagram.

I suspect gem module 10, but i am finding it complicated regarding wiring diagrams and there are 4 interlinked.

Could also be an earth E9 in particular, also are headlights and all other functions working ok ?

double check fuse 22 & 23 for indicators - will probably be ok, in fact check all you can.

The clue here is that the cluster lamps are not working as well as main indicators.

cluster indicator lamps and the indicators come from the gem independently

Had a greater think, if fuses are ok, and all headlamps work, dip beam & levelling then probably gem module - i say that because all left lamps for example and indicator have linked earth, so if there was no earth on that side then the right would still work, instrument cluster indicators come from gem module too.

Thanks, I've checked the fuses. Where is the GEM module?

I was afraid you would ask that, sorry i don't know.

I will ask elsewhere in the meantime and see if i can find out.

this looks like a mk6 fiesta which is the same i believe ?

Do these cars have just one gem module ? i dont know....

Both videos show location and removal for different faults - and is this module at fault is the question...

I suppose you could locate the wiring from indicators, remove plug and apply 12v to see if indicator lights, colours are as follows...

left indicator blue/red

right indicator blue white

left cluster blue / black

right cluster blue / yellow

if they light then use an earth on the wires below

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

inputs to gem unit from indicator stalk and hazard switch are active low, which means use an earth to switch / activate.

left input black / blue

right input black yellow

hazards black orange

If they do light then you have e7 & e17 earth missing from hazard switch and indicator stalk which is unlikely as on the diagram they are independant earths.

if indicators don't light when triggering inputs then gem i think is at fault.

double check the following

fuse 38    7.5a

check green / orange on gem for +12v

check black / red on gem for an earth 0v.

if headlights and rear tails switch on / off ok via light switch then supply to gem will be ok. i asked in my first reply if headlamps were working, it's important you check this - if they don't then you may have a supply fault to gem

Fuse 25 15A

Fuse 25 15A

Thats another option, this fuse supplies orange cable to gem module with another +12v as well as the green / orange.

Strangely on cars fuseboard picture it shows hazard icon, but confusingly (in the wiring diagrams) this fuse is not associated with with hazard switch.

Whilst not of much help, in case anyone wonders about the click sound of indicators but no lights, on modern cars the click is not the sound of the flasher relay like on older cars, the click is from a loudspeaker using computer generated sound

Apologies Barleycorn...

Isetta - a short digression, if computer generated, how can I make it louder in my 2008 Focus ST !! ??

Back on subject....

I reckon there is at least 8 ways 12V gets to the GEM, some controlled by the ignition, and some direct from the battery.  Hazards full into the latter category.

Diag 4 in Haynes does show the hazard switch, and F25 - does the GEM stop the hazrds if indicator on, or vice versa ?  I'll try tomorrow.  It also shows the buzzer as being part of the indicator switch.  Is OP hearing the buzzer, or a relay in the GEM ?

I bet barleycorn David wished he had never asked.... 😆
