Wheel spacers clicking

Featured Replies

I recently installed 2 sets of 20mm wheel spacers to my 1.6 ford focus ecoboost. Im running mk2 st wheels. I noticed after driving i was hearing an annoying clicking sound coming from the wheels. Sounds like metal on metal. Ive taken them off and the sound is gone so im confident its spacer related. I didnt wire brush the hub free of rust or put any copper grease on the hub, i dont know if that would cause the noise. The bolts and wheel nuts were on tight so it wasnt them. One thing ive seen is the bolts on the wheel spacers could potentially be too long, dont know if that would create noise. I brought some new wheel nuts as my old ones had definitely seen better days. Anyone had an issue like this or know someone that has. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

My advice would be leave them off

If the spacer studs/bolts are too long you’ve potentially had the nuts tight by bottoming out on the studs rather then through clamping the wheel fully. That could lead to noises while driving.

Needs sorting out properly before you consider refitting them.

Wheel spacers can be dangerous things, do you have them so it looks as though you have wider wheels fitted?

I have had so many cars recovered to my garage with wheels hanging off, resulting in damaged hubs, there has even been a customer had been belting down a motorway when he stopped because he heard noises to find one of the rear wheels sheared off three studs,

Spacers also put a lot of extra pressure on the wheel  bearings and upset the steering geometry, but it's your car.....
