Pre Collision Assist

Featured Replies

I have a 2020 Focus Estate Active X which I have recently purchased with 7,000 miles on the clock. I have been having an on going discussion with Ford and a dealer about the Pre Collison Assist function. Below 18mph there is no visual graphics of vehicles ahead. Below 18mph there is no warning of cyclists in front even if they are weaving in the vehicle's path. Pedestrians who have run out closely in front are not registered by a warning light or audibly. When approaching a stationery vehicle there is no visual or audible warning. The dealer has said they updated the software and no errors are being shown. I believe the system is not operating as demonstrated in Ford marketing material. Ford have said they can only take the word of their dealer and the dealer has said after speaking to Ford Technical the system is operating correctly. Any comments would be helpful

Most people have the opposite problem, with the system being too sensitive!  I wonder if the previous owner turned the sensitivity as low as possible in the dash menu?

The mach-e is very sensitive. Just  pulling up close behind a row of vehicles and bing, and bong, flashes warning then stamps the brakes on.

The sensitivity is set to maximum. As the dealer could not find any error code they have informed Ford that there is no fault and the system is operating correctly. Should cyclists weaving in front show us in the graphic and the alarm sound.? Should any vehicles show up un the graphic below 18mph?

I saw some graffiti written in the dirt on the back of a bus once that said "test your airbag here".

Perhaps you could try the same?

I just use my eyes and the brake pedal

That is so last century LOL 🤣 (Though being an analogue man in a digital world, I do the same!)

Do you have a fully digital display or analog dials with small display?

I have the latter and get no graphics. Just a message in the small display if it triggers which is very rare although I have sensitivity on low. It only triggers if there is a big speed difference as you get close and you haven’t moved out or indicated. Not just if you are following a cyclist.

Admittedly I've only done ~100 miles in mine.  But in all that time I only saw the warning once, that was for a tight road where I passing a stationary bus on the other side at 20mph or so.

The system is not intended to work below 30kph (approx 18.5mph). It is only triggered if the closing speed between you and something in your path is greater than 'X' metres per second. The value of 'X' varies depending on the speed your vehicle is traveling. The system also does not work above 80kph (approx 50mph) which could be extremely dangerous if accidentally triggered.

This is not "active city stop" as some manufactures have. It is as the name suggests 'assistance' and not intended to replace the drivers responsibility to maintain awareness of their current surrounding at all times.

There is a difference between Pre Collision Assist and Distance Alert.

The former gives an alert that would wake the dead and only activates if there is a real chance that you will hit something if you continue driving the way that you are without taking avoidance action. The latter is just a very small visual indication at the top if the IPC and no audible alert.

You only get the latter if you have Active Cruise Control as opposed to normal Cruise Control and it only works when ACC is not on.

If your car does not have a Radar behind the small square on the lower front bumper then it does not have ACC and will not have Distance Alert but will still have Pre Collision Alert. I believe that the first cars in 2018 did have that additional Radar but it was dropped unless you had ACC shortly after.

If your car should have Distance Alert then there should be an option to enable/disable it in the settings.

All the above assumes that things have not changed for the latter built cars.

The distance breaching whilst cruising works, slowing the car when a vehicle is detected too close. I have an analogue display with a digital display above and a heads up display. With pre-collision function set at high sensitivity the displays only come on above 18 mph.  There are no alerts for bicycles, cars or pedestrians below 18mph. The loud alert sound and red flashing display has come on a couple of times when an ON COMING vehicle has come very close.   It seems the camera software is not detecting vehicles, bicycles or pedestrians. I welcome anyone's comments who has the same system as mine. Thank you for your replies.

I experinced the pre-collison assist activating for the first time today.  I was driving at a little under 30 mph with nothing directly in front of me when the alert sound and message activated. The only explanation I could reason for it triggering  was that there were a couple of kids cycling on the pavement?

Isn't it great that the Ford boffins have taken the traditional, 'back seat driver' and put it in an electronic box 🤣

Does "pre-collision assist" mean it's preparing to assist you in having a collision? :whistling:

I find mine goes off when I go from a dark to very bright area (such as going under a bridge), even with it set to low sensitivity. It pretty much makes it useless as I'm sure I'd be tail-ended if I had the auto braking on.

There must be a fault if it goes off in those circumstances, my one has never suffered from that problem in those circumstances.

To avoid any confusion, If you switch Active Braking off it will enable itself the next time you start the car, you can't permanently disable it and for anyone worried, I have had lots of warnings and there was always a reason for them but my car have never braked itself.

Lads at work have a tendancy to jump out in front of me when I'm low speed and the car/van slams the brakes on while the warning alerts me while I'm nearly kissing the screen!! 😂😂😂😂
