Electrical Fault 09 Fiesta 1.4 TD ( Stumped ) No Clicking from indicators, No Alert when lights left on...

Featured Replies

Good morning folks, I'm a new member here so hope I've added this to the right place, I have looked through old posts prior to posting this so I am sorry if I've missed something.

My 2009 Fiesta diesel 1.4 recently developed a strange fault with the indicators, they stopped working completely and then started working again but with no clicking noise and no visual indicators from inside the car / dash, basically they now work but you can't tell from inside, hazards the same. I bought a new stalk thinking that was the issue' but alas it is the same, I have checked all the fuses I can find and using diagrams eg the main fuse board under the bonnet and the one behind the glove box, I'm not great with electrics but I can't see anything wrong here.

Then over the weekend I notice my car radio is not going off with the ignition as it normally would when turned off and now my warning alert noise that tells you your lights are still on has also stopped working resulting in me leaving my lights on and flattening the battery, minor inconvenience but need to try get to the bottom of it and everyday it seems a new gremlin pops up, I'm stumped literally don't know where to start to try and fix this, could it be the instrument panel? Or am I just missing something really simple.

Thanks in advance, appreciate any help here it's really starting to wind me up 🙂

Sounds like a GEM fault.

Hey Tom, thanks

Where might I find this? is it easy to replace ?

It's behind the glovebox in the Mk7.  Also known as a BCM (body control module) which might help your search.

Physically easy to change, but needs to come from a car of exactly the same spec otherwise some features may not work correctly.  First thing to check would be that all the plugs are in tightly and that there is no sign of water ingress around the module at all.

Hello Dan, @Dandoh81, you have one of two common faults. If you are very unlucky you might have both common faults.

The indicators, the lights, wipers, screen wash and a great many other things are all controlled and operated by the General Electric Module (GEM) which is also known as a Body Control Module (BCM) on later models.

It is a small computer which is located inside the fusebox in the passenger compartment. The GEM suffers from water ingress and corrosion of the connection pins and the tracks of the circuit board. To inspect it you need to disconnect the battery and then remove the glovebox. Remove each of the connectors from the fusebox/GEM and check carefully for signs of greenish corrosion of any pins. If you find any problems try cleaning it first. If things are really bad you may have to get a replacement, but they do require programming.

The second most common problem is the instrument cluster. The solder joints on the connectors and circuit board start to crack and become high resistance. You can remove the instrument cluster and send it to a specialist for refurbishment (about £85) check out eBay for people who do this.
