Battery charging

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost Titanium 2017 plate that I don't use on a regular basis but need to keep the battery charged up while its in the garage.

My car has stop - start technology so would like some advice on the type of charger to use and how it should be connected to the battery.

I have looked at the "CTEK MXS 5.0" charger on Amazon but the video on Youtude show it being connected directly to the Positive post and the Negative post of the battery whereas on other videos it recommends connected the Positive clip to the positive post on the battery but connecting the Negative clip to a metal part in the engine bay so as not to damage the sensors attached to the Negative pole on the battery.                                                                   Other information I have seen says that if using the "CTEK MXS 5.0"charger it should be set to AGM if your car has stop - start technology but I am not sure what type of battery is in my car (its the battery fitted by ford from new).

If anyone can add anymore advice or suggestions on any other type of suitable charge (up to £100) it would be helpful.

Any help or advice would be most appreciated.

A quick look at your battery should tell you what type you have. My Mk 8 has an EFB (see pic) so I would expect yours to be similar. I have a C-Tek and the normal position is fine.

Yes, the negative should be connected to an earthing point on the car, not the negative battery terminal. You can download the full C-Tek manual which makes everything clear.

I also have a Noco Genius 5 charger (ordering mix-up by Amazon but having 2 has been useful during lockdown so I can charge both our cars at the same time) which works equally well and is similarly priced.

I must also mention the Maypole charger which comes highly recommended by @StephenFord 😀 and others and is lower priced.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I take it that your ST has Stop - Start and isn't effected by the C-Tek charger and my battery is the same as yours so I think I will go ahead and read through the manual and order the C-Tek MXS 5.0 as Amazon Prime have it on offer for £58.57.

Thanks also for confirming connection of the Negative terminal, I'm not sure yet whether to do the permanent terminal connections and just plug in the charger or use the crocodile clips.

Thanks again.

It's an ST-Line, not an ST, so 1.0 ecoboost with stop-start. I've used the C-Tek and the Noco on both this and my wife's SEAT with no issues for over 2 years now. I just use crocodile c!ips myself.

I’ve used a CTEK on a number of cars, for lead acid, EFB and AGM you can use normal mode without issue, or exclusively for AGM the AGM mode.
