Welch Plugs

Featured Replies

My mechanic having a nightmare. Now tried 6 sets all blown. Allegedly the holes corrode, but mine only has 38,000 on it.

Gonna metal weld them in, failing that tap them out and put bigger. Not wanting to go the new head route.

Anyone else had this issue ?

Low mileage engines can be worse for corrosion.  Means they sit for long periods with no water circulation inside.  And stay damp without enough heat to drive moisture off outside.  Attacked from both sides.

Core plugs are one of those jobs that I'd leave well alone unless it's really bad as you're just likely to make a minor leak worse!  Too late now I know lol!

Best thing to do would be ask a proper engine shop for advice instead of a general mechanic.  Oversized plugs sounds like a better idea than JB Weld to me.

Cheers, spent the morning googling, quite a few recommend JB especially on blocks where allegedly it can outlast the engine. My guy can do, but just doesn't have the specialist equipment due to its expense for major work. Just waiting for ford to deliver new plugs as local stock seems to have been depleted 🤣.

Just got "her" back, are all cars "she". Cold welded them in. If they go again, hopefully not for a long while, i'll have the funds for a new head.
