StephenFord
I know this is totally irrelevant, but do you know what caused the wires to become damaged like that? Did something like a mounting bracket break, putting pressure on the wiring, or do you think it was a manufacturing fault just waiting for it's day to fail?

Poor design and poor fitment of the wiring harness. The length of the harness to the connector on the TCM is about 50mm too short. Also when the harness was fitted in the factory the way it was routed around one bracket added even more strain on the wires going in to the plug. Then just to add a bit more to the problem the cable tie that should have been around the cable entering the plug to act as a strain relief was missing, so the wires were stretched and getting pulled out of the connector. I have re-routed the harness and removed one plastic fixing which got about an extra 30 - 40 mm length on the cable to the TCM, and of course fitted the missing cable tie so the wires don't get pulled back out. The gearbox used to very occasionally seem to be a little hesitant when changing gear, but never enough to worry too much about it.
Tizer
As well as looking in service Procedures for a TCM Relearn have a look in Output Control Mode, there may be something useful there either under TCM or PCM. There might also be some clues in the PID's. Do you know what type the Transmission is?. I've done some reading up of the limited information that I have and the P074A code is very specific and relates to one of the Shift Fork Position Sensors that work gears 2 and 6 on some gearboxes, maybe not your one though and it is a symptom rather than a cause. The other code relates to either the Shift Forks or their motor as well. There should be a lot of other fault codes for wiring faults such as shorts or open circuits as well and it is strange that they did not throw up codes.
unofix
It's party time 🎉😀🎉 So the answer is FORScan can reteach the TCM. Was able to perform: Transmission Range sensor adaptive learning. Verify, Transmission Range sensor adaptive learning. Perform shift drum adaptive learning [ I think this is what fixed it ] I found a very useful bit of information on the FORScan site that had a step by step guide how to reteach the TCM and test both the gearbox and clutch. https://forscan.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1672 It made some adjustment to the selector 'B' range and all is now working. All 6 gears and reverse and to be honest I think it feels better driving it now than it was before. Thank you to all who have offered help and advice.

iantt
Just think how much that diagnosis and fix would have cost at a ford dealership!!! No, maybe you shouldn't really. Bet it would have taken days to figure out to look at wiring harness. 🤣🤣 2

Yes, like the lady who's been told she needs new transmissions when she only needs a battery or, ay worse has a broken wire.
