Thinking of trading my 1.6 petrol Mk2 in for a 2.0 - what to look for?

Featured Replies

As the title says.

I have been looking at a few Mk2 2.0 petrols for sale recently.

What are the main things to look for with that engine? I am aware they have timing chains, so I assume oil change history and checking for rattles on starting are recommended.

I have read on here before that the swirl flap problems had been sorted by the time the Mk2 petrols were sold. Having read about that issue turned me away from the 1.8 and 2.0s when I was initially looking.

I looked into the insurance and it works out near enough the same for the 2.0 as the 1.6. The tax is also only £45 more per year.

I would be even more tempted if the petrol prices weren't so high. However the published MPG for the 2.0 is not actually a lot lower.

This grey 57 plate Ghia with 60k on the clock looks nice at £1995. The pre facelift models seem to be quite a bit cheaper.
