Hi all,

I wonder if anyone has experienced these problems with 1.8tdci.

While driving I've noticed a noise that sound like a balloon that you blow up a let go, this noise only happens around 1500/2000 revs.

Now if I boot it from standing and go through the gears no noise, it seems to only happen under gentle driving conditions and most noticeable in 4th when increasing power slightly ie. On slight incline.

I have had exhaust checked and that's fine, I have checked turbo pipes and they all appear fine (no leaks)

I'm pretty much at a loss and as there are no error codes I don't have a lot to go on.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Interesting description (BTW would be useful if the title of the post gave a clue) - it sounds similar to the noise mine makes, under the same circumstances, I would describe it as being a bit like and exhaust leak somewhere. Mine's a 1.5ecoblue, happens between about 1500-2250 revs which, I think corresponds to where peak torque comes in. It certainly corresponds to the speed I travel with the caravan in 4th gear (A and B roads) where  it settles into an annoying droning noise.

Mine also has been checked under warranty, and a modified exhaust clamp fitted which has made it a bit quieter but still too noisy for my liking, so I'll be getting it checked again when the car goes in for its service.

The usual way of checking this (BTW my hosepipe listening device seems to indicate it probably isn't the manifold!) is to put the car up on ramps and have a look, since a leaky joint or hole usually can be seen quite easily but, alas, there's a load of sheilding under the car obscuring everything).

If you do find out what it is, I'll be interested

I was thinking of a 'flatulent' balloon noise when I first read this...but perhaps that's not correct?

There are some 'resonance' noises at certain RPMs, different on different engines, not actually a fault, just the way the airflow creates harmonic vibrations in the intake & exhaust system.  Modern engines use resonators in the intake to modify & enhance this noise.  The 8v 1.6 TDCI in particular has a very pleasant resonator noise, using a metal resonator, when pushing up through the revs (imo of course!).  Haven't driven a 1.5 EcoBlue so not sure what the resonance is like on those, though the intercooler is on the rear of them, which will almost certainly magnify any intake resonance and transmit that through the cabin.

My brother in law had a 1.8 TDCI Focus Mk 1 for several years from new, and I don't recall it making any noises like that, though it certainly wasn't the smoothest and quietest diesel I've ever encountered.

Not really relevant but years ago a mate of mind had a Hillman Imp that made an intermittent noise that sounds quite similar - we used to describe it as a f*rt! It drove him so nuts that we ended up  completely dismantlling the engine in search of a cause, found nothing amiss and reassembled the engine to find the noise was still there!😀

Did you get anywhere with this? (I didn't, reminded the dealership at the service last month and came back "No Fault". Mind you, they didn't know how to reset the oil interval display so I don't have a lot of confidence in them ...)
