Focus II weird noise from rear

Featured Replies

Sup guys. My old workhorse wants to give up, but I am not letting her 😀

The problem is intermittent humming noise from rear left when turning right on slow speeds. Sometimes it does it also when driving straight on bumps (just a single hum), but NEVER on higher speeds over 60km/h / 40mph.

Diagnostics done:

- Wheel bearing is fine

- Noise stops right away if I pull on handbrake

- Brake disc and pads visually are fine (no disassembly yet)

- Tried different wheels and tires on rear

- Passed MOT with no problems

- MAYBE just maybe it happens more often when its hotter outside

Thank you in advance!

If you've tried all those things, are you SURE that it's not at the front? Especially if it does it when turning.

A wheel bearing may seem fine on normal testing but with weight off the wheel and spinning the wheel by hand you can not recreate the side pressure that occurs when the car is being driven round a corner. I’m not saying I definitely think it is bearing but testing the bearing in the usual way can not rule it out. Pulling hand brake on could alter the side ways pressure so that does not rule it out as bearing

Pretty sure. I've occasionally had the noise appear if car moves very slowly while parking and then pulling handbrake.

I think I have to replace discs and pads at rear and see if the problem still persists. Also the brake shield plate as its quite rusted through.
