MK4 hard rubber stops on Tailgate

Featured Replies

Noticed on the tailgate, that one was very loose, just like ***** a bolt into a nut, the other one was slightly better, I know they are stops for the tailgate when I close it, the loose one was quite a bit further out than the other stop, I couldn't see a lock nut! is that normal, also how do I adjust them to the correct position.

It's an American swear filter, censors some words that aren't generally offensive in the UK!

And there's so many things I could screw, lightbulbs, paper, my job and screws.

If they are like other ones I've come across, there are indeed no lock nuts (can I say "nuts"??). I think you just have to turn them so that both sides of the tailgate touch at the same time. Maybe a small blob of Blutack on the stops and see if it gets marked when the tailgate closes....

Yeah they are meant to screw in and out to adjust until the tailgate closes nicely. Mine (Mk4) are not that hard - a bit squishy. There are also 2 similar ones under the bonnet so you can line up the bonnet well.

I guess you could mark them and if they keep turning put some plumbers tape or something around the thread.

Once I have found the correct position, I thought Maybe a blob of super glue, to stop them moving.

Good idea with the Bluetack, or coloured chalk might work to set them,

Yes, the reason that when setting up any new device (like a phone, laptop etc) always scroll down bypassing the default option 'English (USA)' and find the 'English (UK)' option, they don't know how to spell properly!

You might regret it if the tailgate bends a bit over the years, or maybe from summer to winter.

True mate, they need to change everything to feel special, what can you do? 😉 (Australian here.) They did create Ford though, so I'll give them that 😀

As a VW guy...it's not all about who created a brand... :whistling:

The good thing about superglue is that it's useless for 'repairs' like that, it becomes brittle, and simply fails over time. If you want it permanent, you need to use an epoxy adhesive...

That's true with superglue, it never seems to stick, the bit you want stuck.

It is strange that one side became unscrewed and you could still shut the Hatch door without slamming. When my car was new I had to wind them down a bit to be able to close the Hatch easily and the Bonnet was the same plus that was even more skew-whiff than the Hatch was.

The best thing to use on the threads is plumbers PTFE tape but you will need to wind the Stop out a bit to expose the threads. Another alternative is a Loctite type of Thread Lock. I prefer the solid type that comes in a Lip salve type dispenser rather than the liquid one.

Yeah superglue doesn't work properly with most types of plastic I think, but if does work even the smallest drop getting into the thread would probably be permanent.

It doesn't appear to be an issue, the tailgate closes fine, seems in line and doesn't rattle when driving, will have a fiddle at the weekend, I'm going to try red chalk on the rubber stop and see if it marks the indent on the body, someone said I could try with Vaseline to check adjustment, when sorted will put a little Araldite on the thread to stop them from moving.

Not sure if anyone else has notice the tailgate rubber bump stop being loose?

Mine are quite easy to turn; maybe similar to your tighter one.
