esp light on

Featured Replies

i changed the mileage up on my car to get it as it should be the day after the esp light is permanantly on ?

is there a setting in elm that will make it stay on or a fuse or is it a sensor only problem got mot thursday so need to sort it asap not esp lol

Might have accidentally ticked 'no ESP' or similar in ELMConfig.  At least you only have the HEC page to check if nothing else was changed.

If it's a genuine fault (seems unlikely!) then there will be a fault code on Forscan...

Yes, it's a Major fault under the new system.

(e) ESC MIL indicates a system malfunction

It's been so long since I used ELMC' I can't remember the exact wording and tick boxes unfortunately.  If you can post a picture or screenshot that might help...but ultimately I'm sure you've got the experience to work them out anyway.

Whilst not really allowed , this is what I did on a 2009 focus mk2.5.   Cars of this age don’t have to have ESP.   But if they do have esp then the light being on is a mot failure.  The car had had problems where sometimes the engine would stutter and the esp light would come on. Like the esp was cutting in when it had no need to. In the menu it would not let me turn it off. Then when I rewired the canbus (due to other problems) I forgot to include the swerve sensor in the circuit.  After that the esp light was on all of time, but it never made the car stutter.   Come mot time I took instrument cluster out, took clear plastic front off, peeled back the bit with the numbers and icons on to reveal the hole where the light was. Put a lump of rubber in the hole with some glue. Put back together.  Mot pass.   Now I know that’s taking a bit of chance on the mot tester not knowing that all focus mk2.5 have esp.  I wouldn’t want anyone to think I would bodge everything like this, because I wouldn’t. Also I didn’t do this to sell a car to someone else.  It was my brother’s car and one year later it was scrapped.

There are another 2 pages for the HEC if you look just above the ABS tickbox.  Not sure if there's anything relevant in those.

For the sake of passing MOT, I'd trying unticking the 'ESP misbuilt detection' but I don't think that'll help.

Would also scan it to see if there are any faults stored.

And if still no luck, I'd reset the ABS module.

Hmm, can't see anything else related to ESP in those pages.

B2477 is a bit worrying as that suggests a corrupt or missing vid block.  That's generally caused by module programming.

C1447 looks like the ESP one...  Steering angle sensor uncalibrated.  Have you driven the car since?

Ah ok, it should have recalibrated by now then.

Not sure what to suggest now.  I'd still try resetting the ABS module if possible.  Could also try the old 'leaving the battery off overnight' to clear & reset all modules together.

Not sure there's a direct equivalent in ELM.  EPB Level 1/DDS Level 2/3 on the first page would be the closest thing.  That shouldn't cause the ESP light though, I've enabled DDS on a few Mk2.5s.
