Grinding noise on cold start.

also comes up with a low engine oil warning for half a second on start.

been told this is an issue with the oil pump, would you agree?



Well that sounds pretty awful...  Is it a 1.0 EcoBoost?

It is… sorry should have put that in the post.

Yeah.  Literally the 3rd or 4th on here this week with the same fault! :sad: 

The cambelt on these runs in oil (known as a wetbelt) as well as the oil pump belt.  Ultimately the cambelt will break if the engine isn't damaged by the lack of oil first.

There's no easy fix unfortunately.  You can have the oil pump removed and cleaned out, as well as having the wet belts replaced, and hope that's as far as the damage has gone.  But the engine may already be damaged internally now after running with low oil pressure.

what would you say is actually causing the noise though? Engine or the oil pump itself?

just trying to get a sense of how far gone this engine might be.

currently the car drives fine with no noises or knocks, and no lights on the dash and no loss of power.

It's the engine making the noise from lack of oil pressure, not the oil pump.  As it's been driven like this, I'd be even more inclined to suggest the engine is beyond saving now.  There is no way to tell for certain without stripping the engine down and looking unfortunately.

Any new information regarding this problem please? Have the same fault. It's been about a week during this winter, except no engine error light comes up. The noise does not kick in immediately after start up, it takes almost 10 seconds to come up. Goes away after ~90 seconds. On a sunnier day previously when the car was heated up by sun a bit, altough was sitting there overnight, this didn't happen. Authorized dealer suggests replacing the timing belt, which i'm reluctant to do. Not sure if worth the investment.

Are you just going to wait until it fails and fit a new engine ?

The YouTube clip shown indicates you might suspect the noise is coming from the Turbo area or perhaps upper engine?

Has anyone used a mechanics stethoscope or any other technique to isolate the actual location of the noise?

The dealer has probably recommended having the cambelt replaced because it needs it anyway (and would also expose the cambelt tensioner and idler if one of those bearings is the issue).

Thanks for checking, both. Definitely don't want to finance new engine.

Adding what dealership said: It is the water pump that needs changing and timing belt change is recommended. I'm inclined to have the belt replaced. Wish however to be sure engine is not beyond saving.

Regarding the positioning of the camera, it is random. Unable to pinpoint the location.

You can help pinpoint it being the coolant pump (or other belt-driven item) by removing the auxiliary belt. Don't run it for too long however as obviously in such a state there won't be any cooling being performed and these engines depend heavily on it! A few minutes from cold is perfectly fine though.
