Oil light

Featured Replies

Good afternoon,

My partner has a 2017 Ford Focus EcoSport (the 1.0L engine one) and her red oil light came on during her drive home from work. Gave it 15 mins and checked the oil level which is fine. Turned her engine back on and the light didn't come on this time.

Any idea what sort of problem this could be and if it's going to hit our finances hard, or if it's something we could do at home? It's only recently passed it's MOT, literally last month I believe.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Craig

It could be the start of the wet belt deteriorating and clogging the oil pump/ filter which causes low oil  pressure. If that is the case then it would be a new pump or cleaned out if possible and a timing belt replacement with fresh oil of the correct grade and filter.

Engine's probably knackered, sorry.

Very common problem on the 1.0 EcoBoost.  Cambelt runs in oil (wetbelt).  It disintegrates over time and small pieces of it block up the oil pump.  The lack of oil pressure then causes excessive heat & wear to engine internals.

If you've caught it soon enough you might just get away with a pump clean & new belt...but you're looking at 4 figures at a garage just for that.

It sadly sounds like the end of yet another Ecoboom engine. After the oil pressure warning light comes on you generally have less than 3 minutes to pull over and switch off if you are to stand a chance of saving the engine.
