Temperature

Featured Replies

Hello

I have a focus mk2 and I was getting oil in my coolant garages was be saying either head gasket or my oil cooler and had the oil cooler changed after testing by mobile mechanic, then I had massive air lock which been sorted back in April 2022,  and touch wood my coolant still looks clean says the garages.

Does a cracked or warped cylinder head leak oil into coolant or vice versa, I don't know.

Now my temperature gauge hardly moves, I took ît on 30 mile run and the temp barely moved. Then I'll drive in traffic it might get near halfway in between 1st mark and second mark off if im lucky, then it drop down soon as I move. Usually on this focus it's pretty stable just before halfway.

I took it to a garage and he said as I've had loads oil in my coolant try giving the coolant sensor a clean on side under coil pack.

What you guys think this is,

head gasket?,

Warped or cracked head?

coolant sensor?,

thermostat?,

Or I'm not sure if water pump can do this.

Thanks so much guys

Could be any of your thoughts, start with the cheapest and work your way thru replacing etc, i'd also say you may still be air locking mk2's can be a pain to purge. heater and blower on full, leave the expansion cap off occasionally squeeze the hoses. Can you see the fluid move in the expansion tank if not the poss waterpump change it and do belts while at it.

First question is,  Does your engine overheat ?

If the answer is no, then change the thermostat.

After that it is a process of elimination.

Nah not overheating yet it did twice when had air lock but I switched it off from forscan readings, i just driven 12 miles and gauge not hardly moved and heater was quite hot.

What engine does the car have ?

  • Author

It 1.6 tivct. I've just drove back 12 miles temp gauge hardly moved from the left, now on driveway it's moved upto 93c got to 95c from forscan and dash reading and with gauge halfway, I've switched car off..

Could it be head gasket warped or cracked, coolant sensor, thermo, water pump?.

I've had oil n coolant mix before hence oil cooler change.

What I noticed today I try to look at my coolant sensor, in the washer bottle was mostly blue, I'm still expecting a slight oily greasy smell from coolant oil mix, but when I drained off a litre it was off white.

thanks guys

Change the thermostat

U think it's the thermostat then causing this, not head head gasket.

Are they easy to change as its under the alternator. What price we looking at do we change just the stat, or stat and gasket, or stat gasket and housing change.

Would water pump cause this to

Cheers guys

The video above seems to be from the USA as the chap has an American accent.

It is likely a Mk1, as the Mk1 Focus was built up to 2007 in the USA, with the US Mk2 being a completely different body style. They apparently didn't have the 1.6 Ti-VCT engine on the US market.

It looks like it may be the 2.0 Duratec Petrol.

There is a photo on Wikipedia of a facelift US Mk1 with Mk2 looking headlights and grille.

The vid was for ballpark and difficulty, so the OP could decide to diy or garage it. Yes its american but 90% on the money.

Guys you think worth changing the thermostat on its own or replacing the housing with it.

What about the coolant sensor.

I have forscan is there any ways to test coolant sensor or thermostat with the program, also does forscan detect anything to do with head gasket.

Cheers

1.6 ti-vct has an electrically controlled thermostat like this.

I've already changed in my 2005 focus. I suggest to change the thermostat with housing.

Thank you.

Was it easy for you and how long. Did u have take headlight out and the move the alternator and move to the power steering bottle out way after a coolant drain.

Thanks

Electrically controlled thermostat.  Why do they do that . So much more complicated and expensive than a waxstat. With an electrically controlled thermostat I would be wondering if the thermostat is faulty or if the thermostat is fine but it’s not receiving the correct signal. Can it be replaced with a waxstat?  Or would that confuse it and cause fault codes or other undesirable problems. I have no idea what tests can be performed on an electrical thermostat. Someone somewhere must know eg connect certain various voltages to certain terminals and see if it moves (still needs removing though to see if it moves).

Electric stat allows for much tighter temp control.  These also run hotter than standard.

The 1.6 Ti-VCT was designed with max efficiency in mind...they went to a lot of effort and complication to make them nowhere near as efficient as the 1.6 TDCI. :whistling:
