drum brakes: buy new or score inside?

Featured Replies

hi guys

my driver rear side drum brakes have started squealing, i had it apart already thinking the pads needed replacing but they are still good so gave it a good clean. i even tried sandpapering the inside of the drums. put it back together again, started good then the squealing started again.

should i just buy new drums as i imagine they would come already scored inside or should i try again using stronger sandpaper?

thank you again guys

The inside of the drums are meant to be smooth !! They are not intended to be scored.

The 'pads' for drum brakes are actually called 'Brake Shoes' you only get brake pads on disc brakes.

Did you clean out the dust from the drums and back plate ? and did you back off the auto adjusters before refitting and then adjust back up by operating the handbrake a half dozen times ?

hhmmm.... i read somewhere that the drum bit that comes out should be scored inside of it.

ok, i will leave that as it is. brake shoes? il try remember that.

yes, i cleaned the back plate and the drums using brake cleaners then wiped them down.

i didnt touch any adjusters, all i did was let go the handbrake.

The first thing you need to do is get a can of brake cleaner and spray it all clean. Then lubricate all the anchor points as per the backing plate picture below all the ledges where the brakes touch need lubrication especially the sides of the bottom middle bit where the bottom of the shoes make contact.

It can be quite hard to do it without getting it on the brake surface. I tried that my self once without removing them but removing them gives you a bit of experience. Removing the retaining pins will give more room but be careful to not get it in the actual brake surface and also don't press the brake pedal whilst the drum is off or the cylinders will pop off the ends and start spewing out brake fluid. It's also a good idea to rub of any excess rust on the plates with sand paper then do the brakes cleaner again then grease. Yes that grease is good enough.

hi guys

i have now replaced the absorbers, front brakes. i pressed the brake pedal few times to let it settle.

i have driven the car now and when i press the brake pedal to slow down, the pedal seem to go down further than before, is this normal?

Yes, if it only a bit further. New brakes take quite a few operations to fully bed in, and can feel a bit spongy until they do.

Check they don't pull to one side, or cause vibration either in the car or in the brake pedal when being operated firmly from reasonable speed (eg 50mph). Also that the pedal does not continue to creep down when held on. If it does, carefully inspect the calipers & piston seals for any sign of fluid leaks.

many thanks

will test it later.

just got back from test driving the car and the brake pedal is back to normal 🙂

forgot to mention that the front left had abit of pad left but the right one was down to the metal bit but the rotor/disc is still flat with no lip on the back of it so i am guessing it is still fine to use the same disc.

If it looks flat & smooth with no cracks, and is still has at least the specified thickness, then it will be fine. Hopefully you caught the problem in time, before any lasting damage was done.
