Focus MK3 diesel 1.6 - a few questions re: leaks, unidentified parts and how to remove a panel

Featured Replies

Hi all,

So I'm fresh from (hopefully) remedying the boot leak issue but I've drawn a blank on a couple of other small issues and wondered if anyone could help?

First image - there's some fluid pooled in the recesses in some of the engine support struts. It's pinkish-orange, could be coolant or rusty water. Coolant levels seem ok. I'll get it to a mechanic but wondered if anyone had experienced this as well?

Second image - there's something leaking onto the wheel strut. Last v recent MOT said some oil misting around this area but this looks fairly heavy to me. I'll get the mechanic to check it but again wondered if this is something common? (The cardboard is under there as there was a leak when I parked on a nose-down incline yesterday and I didn't know if it was fresh - nothing yet since the card has been down).

Third & fourth image - what are these pods, under the bonnet, just by the wiper pivots? Are they supposed to have a filter or something in them?

Fifth image - how does one remove this panel that's beneath the steering wheel? When I take a corner I can hear what sounds like something sliding loose around in there - like metal on plastic, like someone's dropped a nut or bolt or something. I can't see any screws and it kind of feels like it should pop out of some clips, but it doesn't want to come and I don't want to force it.

Thanks again all. Other than that, I need to replace the pollen filter which seems very straight forward, and plan to replace the washer nozzles on the bonnet as they're faded and look old.

All the best,

Mike.

image one would be coolant, images 2 could be oil thats dripped down from the oil filter last time it was serviced.  image 3 and 4 nothing missing from them bits it`s just so you can get to the base of the wiper arms better.

1.  That is coolant (unless a mechanic spilt some Tango).  Likely to be from the thermostat housing or temp sensor.  Chances are something has been changed in that area and just not cleaned up properly?

2. Oil on the wishbone must have come from the wheel end.  Check the CV boot carefully as that's a contender.  It does look a lot for a shock leak, but if that was advised on MOT then the seal may have worsened since.  Should be able to be feel it in the ride if so.

3.  Those are grills for the cabin intake but the filter is inside.

5. Think it does just clip on.  Used parts on eBay are good for spotting fixing points.

Thank you v much.

The seller did say the oil had recently been changed during a service. Hopefully it's just that. I'll keep an eye on the coolant level.

Thanks again.

Thank you very much.

Hmm, maybe something to do with the coolant was changed during its last recent service.

The MOT was really recent, like just over a week ago and I haven't done many miles since but yes - I guess it could have worsened. I can't particularly feel anything off in the ride. I'll get under it and have another look.

Good tip on the panel, thank you.

It'll be in for its timing belt soon so I'll get them to look at the other bits whilst they're there.

Appreciate you taking the time to reply.
