Direct Debit etc, problems - September 19 2022

Featured Replies

I've had a couple of "nudge" emails regarding payments that should have been made by direct debit, recurring card arrangement, etc. On checking my previous account statements I find these usually hit the relevant accounts on 19 September.

I understand that interbank payments were suspended on September 19 because of the funeral of HM the Queen and assume this may have something to do with it.

I'm wondering if these payments have now been missed altogether or will catch up in a couple of days and tried asking the online chat of the organisations concerned, but the bots don't understand the question and I'm reluctant to spend hours on their telephone "helplines" listening to muzak in the vain hope of someone answering!

Wonder if anyone else has been similarly affected?

I'd pretty much guarantee they'll try to take them again in a couple of days

Direct Debits should have been processed on Tuesday.  If you've got internet or app banking, I'd keep checking those for another couple of days.

My bank sent me a message saying they would be paid over the following days.

Thanks guys, I'm assuming they will just catch up in a couple of days. I'll be away for a few days after tomorrow so don't want to be messing about trying to chase things using the mobile phone!

Bit annoyed as I had a similar issue last month with an insurance renewal DD but that was just a "normal" c*ck-up on their part!

It's not very satisfactory though, when one part of a computer system is failing to take an automated payment on the due date, while another part is sending you a reminder as if it was your fault!😠😠

It was a very late notice bank holiday. It’s likely that the system which issues reminders hadn’t been updated to take account of the bank holiday. I doubt anything will actually happen and any DD due on a bank holiday are usually processed the next working day.

Just an update - the main payment issue was with my broadband service and I was tempted to just leave It alone and see if It sorted itself out, but I decided in the end to check on things and make sure. Couldn't find any information on their website about the issue, and the bots on "live chat" didn't understand the question, so I reluctantly turned to the phone. Amazingly I got through to customer services very quickly.

It transpired that it was (or so they said) indeed a problem caused by the special bank holiday. My DD  had not actioned for the 19 September bill and I was informed it would not now be taken, so I ended up making a one off payment. We then discovered my DD instruction/banking details had dropped off file altogether (they couldn't explain why) so had to be reinstated.
