MK3 Focus headlight washers not working

Featured Replies

Hi all

My headlight washers are no longer working and I’m wondering if the pump might have died.

What I’ve done so far myself -

- Checked the two 20amp fuses in the passenger footwell and the headlight pump fuse in the engine bay fuse box.

- Made sure the reservoir was full, headlights on and drove around for thirty minutes trying to activate them every few minutes. Front and back windows get fluid fine.

What I don’t know…

I understand the headlights have a separate pump? Could anyone tell me it’s location as I’d like to test it’s working when it sees a voltage.  Is it accessible through the drivers side wheel arch where the windscreen pump is?

Does this secondary pump have its own relay, could this be a problem worth checking out?

Your wisdom is much appreciated 😁👍🏻

Cheers

Phil

Headlamp washer pump will be in the washer bottle same as the screenwash pump, can’t advise on how you’d access it on a mk3 but someone will soon I expect.

If the mk3 has an external (not part of GEM/BCM) then you could try removing it and shorting the connections to put 12v straight onto the pump. Odds are though that the pump has died.

Cheers mate, appreciate your reply.

Had a nose on eBay for a used pump to see if I could find one in-situ and low and behold, it is in the bottle as you thought it would be (grey one in the photo going off Ford parts catalogue)

ll’ll get at it tomorrow and check the feed to the washers themselves is still in place first 😂 Puddles are forming front and back of the front. wheel arches but this could just be windscreen drainage. If they’re fine I’ll get some  multimeter probes into the female side of the motor supply connector to the pump, cycle the washers a few times and see if the harness is pushing a voltage. If it does then, your prediction may be right.

I dont fancy spending a £100 on new washer pump though so might see if I can get a Chinese copy….😭

Update….

Sunday morning DIY on the drive…

As suggested, headlight washer pump is toast.

Probed the power connector to the pump, turned on headlights and operated the washer, voltage supply to the pump actually peaked at 13v but I was too slow to hold it 😂

I’ve just put a bung in the grommet where the pump draws fluid for now, you can see a blue piece of plastic sticking up where the pump sits….so new pump on order.

It’s really easy to access with the arch liner removed, the screen washer pump is a lot tighter though so I’d probably remove the bottle if I was doing that.
