MK1 ENGINE SWAP

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I have a 2005 mk1 focus petrol thats been siting for a few years some, rust some other work needed and lost documents, have a contact with a 2007 mk1 diesel with bad engine maybe gasket.

Assuming everything else is the same what would be required to put the gas engine into the diesel car?

Any input would be greatly apreciated.

2007 would have been well into Mk2 in the UK, perhaps the Mk's are different where you are but definitely worth checking both are Mk1.

You'd obviously need the engine, gearbox, engine ECU and exhaust.  Would also need the dash clocks (different rev counter and warning lights between petrol & diesel).  And the fuel tank lift pump.  The fuel tank and lines may be the same, but you'd obviously have to clean them out very well if reusing those.

I don't know if all the engine bay wiring and coolant pipes would be compatible without some modification.

Just A miracle, and all of the things Tom has mentioned plus front suspension as the engine weight is different.

Thanks, the petrol is an automatic whilst the diesel is a standard. How difficult would it be to keep the standard gear box?

The gear ratios will be all wrong.

I'm now rethinking my original statement of needing a miracle. This is going to require divine intervention and the use of Harry Potters wand. 🤣

Funny, the mechanic made it sound like it wasn't a big deal😪

Thing is the petrol is a bank repo and no one can tell me anything about the condition and its been siting in a lot for a couple years.

Got it cheap at an auction but they cant find any documents so I cant fix it and license it so wanted to use it and fix the other which is going for a low price😪😪

Ok I did abandoned the project with the Diesel but I still have two focus gathering dust and rust. 2003 2lt YS4E engine, engine good, body very rusty, 2007 mk2 1.6l HWDA engine body not two bad., engine seized from sitting near sea and rusting.

Ok. now how about putting the MK1 2.0L engine into the Mk2?

The 2003 Focus MK1 2.0 petrol engine is a Zetec E (blacktop).

From the Focus MK2 onwards the Zetec E was discontinued. The Focus MK2 did have the much newer 2.0 Duratec HE engine which is a completely different engine.

So you want to build a vehicle / engine combination that never existed. This will introduce a lot of challenges. For example:

* Your MK1 has a MTX75 gearbox. Your MK2 has an IB5 gearbox.
* You can convert the MK2 to MTX75. This requires new driveshafts, gearbox mounts, shifter cables, shifter mechanism, etc.
or
* You can keep the MK2 IB5 gearbox, driveshafts, gearbox mounts shifter cables and shifter mechanism.
* The flywheel / clutch combination will be a mix and match between different Ford models.
and.
* The exhaust will not fit. Custom made exhaust parts are required to make the exhaust fit.
* The 278 mm front brakes of the MK2 should be upgraded to 300 mm.
* The front springs should be changed to match the engine / gearbox weight.
* The fuel system needs to be connected and will probably require custom parts.
* The air intake system needs to be connected and will probably require custom parts.
and most of all.
* The Focus MK1 communicates over SCPbus. The Focus MK2 communicates over CANbus. These are not compatible.
* A custom programmable PCM (ECU) for the Zetec E engine is required to make it communicate with the Focus MK2.
* Custom software is required which will probably requires a lot of research and development.

Usually also important are emission standards. The Zetec E engine will only meet the Euro III emission standard. Your MK2 version will meet the Euro IV emission standard. I do not know the UK regulations but in many countries it is not allowed to install an engine that does not meet or exceed the original emission standard of the vehicle.

Thanks for your input. A little more information, both vehicles have automatic transmissions, the older one is a left hand drive vehicle while the newer is a right hand drive.

Where I am emissions testing is not yet mandatory.

What country are you in?

Blimey. Scrap the pair of them. FAR to much bother to swap parts from one to the other.

I can understand slightly the reasonings of what you're trying to do but ruck me what a waste of time and money and effort.

Get something else with the scrap value.

Geez I've read 000's of threads and this one takes the biscuit.

SCRAP SCRAP SCRAP SCRAP SCRAP the ruddy pair of them.

Ok, Sunny Jamaica in the Caribbean,

Now I located a 1.6l Duratec Ti-VCT from a 2012, person has wire loom and ecu. Let me know what would be involved with this.
