how to stop water dripping?

Featured Replies

hi guys

been trying real hard to find a cure for this.

i have replaced my spark plugs few days ago and noticed surface rust in the spark plug cavity. the thing is i dont actually know when water was in there but last night its been raining all night and been driving around for few hours for testing purposes and although few drips went on the ht wires and some drips in the plastic part (don't know what its called) where the ht wires are, the spark plugs and the well was dry.

i am not sure if the previous owner did an engine wash and water somehow got in the spark plug well and they didnt dry it out and just left the water in there.

even though last night seem good that no water went in the cavity, i would still like to stop the drips though.

as you can see how much rust in the cavity:

i have read that some people went for the revised jet washer or just use some sealant but where do i apply the sealant though?

i would like to try the sealant first before buying some revised jet washer first.

there are other ideas like an engine cover, although that does stop the water dripping into the spark plug area, the water is still going into the engine which i dont really want.

any help please

many thanks again guys 🙂

If its dry after the rains weve had the last few days i'd leave well alone. Typically you get a misfire or sluggish lump from wet plugs. Put it out your mind till it runs like a bag of spanners after about 5-10 mins when pressures up.

thank you

it seems you know how i am feeling when you said 'put it out of your mind'. it has been on my mind non-stop as it looks very worrying. but i guess i will leave it and just keep checking to see if water does get in or not.

thing is, i am not sure when the water was in there. ive had the car since may.

i had water ingress and it was the core plugs ran like 5h1t, and were a pig to sort and finally seal. with rust it means the water has/had been in a while. Youll soon know if its wet.

ok, the only thing i want to do is just try stop the drips at least.

could anyone tell me where to put the grease or sealant please?

i only have the graphite engine sealant but if you advise to use grease then i will get some.

push the washer jets out from the bonnet and apply silicone grease around the base of them before refitting or buy a volvo c30 top engine cover .. lots of info on the topic if you do a search .. silicone grease method has worked for me for the last 14 years

so push the jet washer out from under the bonnet? then put grease around the jet wash and put it back in the bonnet?

just making sure i understand what you said.

thats exactly what i have done ..put silicone grease around the underside lip of the washer jets then push them back into the bonnet ..a lot of others have bought the volvo c30 top engine cover ..it covers the spark plugs to stop the water getting in .. its only the 1.6 focus thats affected as the engine sits further back and the sparkplugs are then under the washer jets that leak when it rains .. the only reason the upgrade to spray jets works is because they have a foam gasket between the jet body and the bonnet

is it volvo C30 or S40 (MK2 1.6 petrol)

i think theyre both the same part

update guys:

popped the bonnet before i drove the car tonight and there was a small puddle where the ht wires are, as i had only sealant in car i thought i would try that out first.

made abit of a mess but i can cut bit of it off to make it look better. the rain was quite hard tonight and i waited for 30 mins to see the outcome. it was leaking slightly on the back of it which i didnt seal. i only sealed the top.

i will have another go when i get some silicone grease.

i was going to get the rocker cover but i dont have the bolts where it should be:

You will get a better result if you actually remove the jet from the bonnet and then apply the sealer on the contact face.

It is fiddly to disconnect the jet from the bonnet, slide it then push up. Once you get one out and look at the clip it will be obvious.

I did mine many years ago and never a drop since.

thank you

i have decided to get the revised jet wash and try that out instead.

does anyone know the part number for the revised one please?

the spray mist is weak.. i used the silicone grease and had no trouble for almost 14 years

ahh ok, i have ordered it earlier then realized it might be the wrong one. i have a wire sticking out at the bottom bit below where the hose joins unless mine comes out but i have tried and the wire wont budge.

non heated will still work, just remember to cover the leads up when you unplug them as you won`t be needing them again until you invest in new heated washers. hope you won`t have too much trouble removeing the old one`s now that you stuck them down with sealant.

that is good to know, was trying to cancel it but might be too late now.

just been browsing ebay for some heated ones now to see how much they are.

i found some for 30 pound posted for the pair, good condition too, in 2 minds whether to buy them or not.

does the part number have to be the right one or is there others that will fit?
