Thoughts on condition of brake disc please!

Featured Replies

Okay so I have some good knowledge with mechanics and car but it's been noted as an advisory that my brake discs are worn and pitted when I had it MOT'ed and then a few months later I had to have a tyre replaced and they also commented on the condition of the brake discs saying exactly the same thing.

I decided to have a look at my brakes and removed a disc to inspect it properly but I cannot see what on earth these people are talking about. The brake disc is only worn slightly and as far as the pitting goes there isn't any really apart from the edges where the brake pad doesn't touch. Also the pads themselves have a substantial bit of material left on them so they're fine too.

Does anyone on here agree with them and recommend I renew my brake discs??

Well there is some pitting but not what I would consider excessive.  If you do decide to replace them you will also have to replace the pads.

Agree, that's not too bad...Mine are bad...outside face is fine but the inside face is not pretty. Got an advisory in the MOT back in Feb. New discs and pads ready to go but just dragging it out a bit to next MOT as I don't want the new discs to suffer in winter as I don't drive that much anymore.

They're definitely worn, but I wouldn't say they need replacing.  Will probably just be advised again on this year's MOT.

I think a huge number of discs get replaced unneccessarily .  It’s easy money for garages as it’s a quick job and it’s easy to persuade people to have them done as it’s a safety thing.

Further comment. I don’t know how long you have had the car and if the mileage you will do now is more than it’s done in the past.  If car not used regularly in past then rust sets in . If you now use it a lot more and often you may actually find that overtime the surface improves and gets smoother - not overnight - more like months.
