passing car test

Featured Replies

hello people just looking for info my daughter passed her car driving test few days back she is only 19,any idea with is best black box insurance people to use cheers not got a car yet just looking to find cheapest for her

Run all the comparison sites, i'd sit down while doing so, it'll be scary.

Personally I don't recommend Blackbox insurance for many reasons but each to their own.

Try these people (link below)  and get a quote with and without to see if it makes much difference. Also check what the terms of the blackbox are, is there a curfew time when the car can't be used ? What happens if you drive her car an accidentally exceed the speed limit ?

I'm a bit unsure about it too, though I appreciate in some cases it may be the only way to get cover. I wonder if it's an age thing - I don't like disclosing any more information than is absolutely essential, whereas folks nowadays seem quite happy to share their life stories on Faceache, Twatter, etc.

The site you linked to does, in fairness, provide some balanced information on the pros and cons of black box cover, as do several others.

Try adding an experienced driver (parent) as this can sometimes lower the price.

From 2018-2020 I had a vw lupo for my daughter and son to use . I did the insurance through admiral without a black box. I found it was cheaper to have them two plus my wife on it, although if I put myself on instead of my wife it was more expensive. Me and my wife both had licenses over 30 years with no accidents or convictions so I can only assume the extra driver makes it cheaper if female.  It’s hard to understand how the computer program works for this stuff and different combinations of ages, areas, cars etc will also affect which insurer is cheaper.   Always try loads of different combinations including different excesses.  Ps- I always had one of them shown as main driver, I did not say me or my wife were main driver. Pps- I think 1 litre lupo is a super little car for young drivers but it seems harder to get a cheap one now.

Yes, friends with children who are new drivers have told us the same thing. Insurers seem to regard this as positive, at least some of the time an experienced driver is in the car, I guess.

Important to do it this way round though, with the parent as an additional driver, rather than insuring in the parents name with the youngster as an additional driver, which would be "fronting".

@Eric Bloodaxe yes, should have said to make new driver the main and adult as additional.

Also, check at renewal time again. Our son just got his renewal and it was a bit steep so he called up to 'leave' and by taking his mum off the policy again it saved him £100! 🤷

You probably won't be going with them, then!

Apart from price, another reason to avoid them is that, afaik, they're the only insurer to ask if any driver has attended a speed awareness course and may treat you as a greater risk if so, and up the premium.

Try 'Flow' car insurance which is actually LV.
