2019 Focus mk4 1.5 engine not turning off when ignition is off.

Featured Replies

Hi, I’m new here and feeling a bit lost. I am wondering if anyone has heard of this:

I have a Jan 2019 Focus 1.5 STX-Line that I have had from new it has done 33k miles. In the past couple of months it has started to not turn off properly when I push the button, instead of shutting off it will thrum/judder, I’ll push the button again to turn the ignition back on then push again and it will shut off. Sometimes it will completely drain the battery after several hours. Or I will get back in it and if I push the clutch it will start up with out touching anything else. When I have turned the ignition off I have been able to press the accelerator and you can here the engine revving, yet the dashboard and instrument cluster will be off and black.

I have took the car to my main dealer where it came from. They said they cannot find any fault codes and I picked it up when I got home it done it again and the next day when I got into it after work it was dead and needed jump starting.

So I took it back to the dealer. They have said they still can’t find a fault code and they cannot replicate what I have described or what I had shown them in a couple of videos and they still have it. I’m absolutely gutted and it seems to have happened 6 months after I paid it up and the warranty had run out.

If anyone has had this happen to them or have heard of this I’ll be very grateful to hear any insight you may have.
Thanks.

You didn't say if it was a Diesel engine, if it is then the most likely cause is that the Throttle Valve is not closing off for a few seconds to kill the engine like it should do. This should be easily monitored with FORScan or any other tool that can monitor Live Data.

If the Oil level is too high or Oil is getting into one or more of the combustion chambers then that could cause the same symptoms although usually more serious.

It’s a 1.5 turbo petrol engine, I’m afraid.

At a guess, I suspect you may have water ingress somewhere, water ingress into the bcm used to cause this on other fords.

Maybe find out where the bcm is, unplug all multi plugs and check both ends of the terminals for discolouration/corrosion.
