NOOB QUESTION regarding reversing lights on a Gen 4 (C519) Focus Titanium X Edition

Featured Replies

As I said, a Noob type of question.

My daughter took delivery of a Dec 21 ('71 Plate) Focus Titanium X Edition last Thursday.

Am I right in thinking that only the nearside reversing light SHOULD work and not both sides?

The driver's side LOOKS like it has bulbs/LEDs in there but it isn't working when reverese is selected.

Is this an example of FMC's penny-pinching?

If my assumption is correct, how easy is it to source an offside light unit from a LHD car and wire the lights in parallel so that both sides work?

Where would be the best place to source the relevant light unit - I'm guessing Ford dealers won't supply them and UK breakers yards won't have them either?

I only know this because I made a tit of myself at the dealer when I got my old 2018 Focus. I called them and was complaining about one of the lights being broken, eventually put me through to the workshop and fella told me it’s normal and the other one is the fog light

So it is a case of FMC penny-pinching - yes?

A lot of car manufacturers do it, offside is fog light to show which is drivers side (offside). Do you really need two reversing lights anyway? You can't see them sat inside the drivers seat 😉

My old Mercedes C240 had same set up, one reverse light, one fog. (Though the penny pinching in Mercedes was using similar quality steel as a baked bean can LOL)

The question of the Focus Mk4 reverse light is becoming almost as frequent as timing belt failures 🤣

One reverse light - passenger side.

One rear fog light - drivers side.

Even the mk1 focus had this system, nothing has changed🤭

Focus MK1 & 2 had single reverse in the bumper, which was useless.

Lots complained, including myself, (you used to get a 3MIS survey then, they don't care anymore) on MK3 they went to twin reverse.

Old MK3 customers who have gone into MK4 are complaining because it's gone back to single reverse, which gives poor light. (Myself included)

Mk2 single reverse light is indeed cr*p, hence my very useful mod of not only replacing the bulb with an LED, but also the addition of an LED light under the bumper. I can now see much better reversing in the dark!

My mk2.5 came out of the factory with privacy glass and auto dimming rear view mirror making the single reversing light even more useless.

Moving on many years I’ve got a reversing camera plus nice bright LED bulbs in both sides (without losing the fog lamps) so all is good now 🙂

Thanks for the replies folks.

Personally, the least Ford could do is fit twin reversing lights if the car has darkened rear privacy glass, however I would much prefer a reversing camera along with parking sensors (as per my '67 Plate Titanium X).

This said, the Focus just has one more year of life left before both the Fiesta and Focus follow the Mondeo into history as Ford focuses (see what I did there?) on electric vehicles.

This year's mid-term refresh will be its last.

I just hope that with the new EVs coming through, Ford drop the ridiculous love affair that they have with touch controls.  Far better to have rotary controls for infotainment volume and ventilation fan speed imho.

Even having '+' / '-' buttons for volume on the steering wheel isn't as good as VW's rotary volume control (which also acts as a click-switch).

And, whilst I'm having a rant, give me a rotary illumination dial for the infotainment/sat nav screen and move the front & rear fog light switches to somewhere that isn't hidden by the steering wheel!

Yes these kind of modern day problems just didn't seem to exist on the model 'T' and I bet they had twin reverse lights 🤣

mmm... Just the one rear fog then.

It’s got a proper fog lamp 👍

Err, just the one side light you mean!!

I had to check there was a wire going to it as it looked initially like it could have been paraffin powered.

Fog wasn't invented back then. Just Smog 🤣🤣🤣

I can't see any wire in your picture, Ian, and the ventilation holes round the top suggest it may well be.

Or even acetylene.

Has anyone got the part number for the paraffin lamp brackets?

Supplementary question - are the o/s and n/s brackets identical or are they handed?

😀

The brackets are universal

Halfords are out of stock right now, but are expecting them in before Christmas... 😁

You might be out of luck with getting paraffin, now that I have cleared some space by using up my Covid toilet rolls I've been stocking up on paraffin for the impending Gas supply cuts this winter.
