1.8 Petrol Drum to Disc Conversion

Featured Replies

So I am following this guide and have got all the main component's. but I have just realised something...

The rear calliper's I got are from an ST and I believe they are for 280mm rear discs. are all other parts in the guide I have added on here which I found on another post the same except the discs?

Do I need anything extra as on the video which I have also linked in this post at 2mins 30seconds you can see an additional part being put on?

Thanks in advance...

Drum brake to Disc brake conversion.pdf

This isn't a conversion I've done however I can see the difference between the video and the PDF.

On the PDF, the mounting plate can be used for both drums or discs.  It has the 4 central bolt holes as well as the 2 bolt holes on the far edge for the caliper.  On the video, that car does not have the extra bolt holes on the far edge, so an adapter plate has to be added for the caliper carrier.  I don't know which models had both, the easiest option here will just be to go out and look at your own car to see if it has the mounting points for a caliper or not.

Nice to see that the PDF guide I wrote 10 Years ago is still used today.

"Normal" Focus MK2/MK2.5 versions have the following disc brake diameters:
278 mm front discs, 265 mm rear discs --> 1.4, 1.6 Duratec, 1.8 Duratec HE and the 1.6 TDCI.
300 mm front discs, 280 mm rear discs --> 2.0 Duratec HE, 1.8 TDCI and 2.0 TDCI.

The Focus MK2/MK2.5 ST has larger brakes:
320 mm front discs, 280 mm rear discs.

You can not install 280 mm rear disc brakes on a car with 278 mm front disc brakes. This will result in an incorrect brake balance.

Compared to the 265 mm rear disc brakes described in my guide the 280 mm rear disc rakes have different brackets, brake discs and brake lines. All other parts (including the calipers) are identical.

So the ST calliper's are fine to use on my conversion but I will need new brackets?

I did wonder if the braking distribution would be all wrong.

Yeah I have just been out and double checked and the caliper mounting holes are there behind the drums

Yes, the rear calipers of all Focus MK2/MK2.5 (except RS) are all identical.

Note that the Youtube link in your initial post is a 2009  Focus (USA) and not a Focus MK2. The 2009 Focus (USA) is basically still a Focus MK1.

That's good to know.

I did see on some other forum that the first year of the mk2.5 had the exact same rear axle as the Mk2 but 2009 to 2011 mk2.5 did not include the calliper holes behind the drums. However I have just looked at the mounting points are there on my 2010 Focus

I also noticed on your guide you painted inside the callipers where the pads sit. Just wondering if you had any issues with this? i.e. do the pads still move ok and not catch on the paint etc?

So having a bit of an issue tracking down a set of brackets for my calliper's.

Anyone able to point me in the right direction?
