If the codes are Ford specific there is a good chance it won't read them. You could use FORScan (which is free for use on a laptop), and a good ELM327(modified) cable from TunnelRat Electronics.

Is this a Mk2.5? Could be the cluster solder problem. The symptoms described are identical to those I had on our 2010 Mk2.5.

Forscan picked up a number of CANbus errors. If these are not Ford-specific an ordinary reader might see them.

Had the very same issue only few weeks back.

Generally speaking it only came up when the car exceeds 3000rpm.

Replacing of fuel filter was my solution. Working perfect now.

I think we're flogging a dead horse here guys !

The OP hasn't been back to even check for replies so I guess the problem isn't important or urgent.

I had a similar fault in 2019 same cure worked for me then.

Right now I have a non starter display shows 'engine system fault' and I was thinking this would be a repeat. It was running when I parked up several days ago but now dead.

Yes it is an old car but only 85k genuine miles and never used  for shopping - always a minimum of 10 miles whenever used.

I'm a bit old as well so can't do things like change fuel filters etc but would like to know if I can get rthe filter changed would that remove the 'fault' warning or would it require some gizmo to reset.

Maybe disconnect the battery for a while?
