Exhaust filter full

Featured Replies

I keep having a message on my screen (Exhaust filter full . Service now.)

Is this urgent?  I can't get to the Ford garage for a few days. Is there a way of getting rid of the message?

Getting rid of the message doesn't get rid of the problem.

It's a 1.0 MHEV as far as I remember.

It's possible it needs a PCM update as a few of the GPF equipped 1.0s did, but I can't remember if any of those were MHEV now?

Taking it for a longish drive, focusing on over-run (accelerating too much and then letting off throttle) seems to be the best way to help regen a GPF.  Not the same process as a DPF on a diesel.

Petrol or diesel? Do you do lots of short journeys?

It's a petrol Ford Fiesta Activ Hybrid.  I did 40 miles yesterday and thought that maybe would solve the problem but no it's just the same, otherwise I do only do short journeys during the week.

There should have been a previous warning telling you that the GPF was at its limit and to Drive to Clean Now. The warning you are getting now is telling you that it is now over its limit. I'm not sure if Ford can do a Manual Regeneration or if they now need to possibly take it off and clean or replace it.

The last time I looked there was not a Service Procedure in FORScan for Manual Regeneration for these cars yet.

To expend on what Tom said, the Exhaust temperature needs to be quite high for normal Regeneration to occur and at the first warning the car should be driven like your Granny is not in the back in varying conditions and using the Rev range of 1500 - 4000 for at least 20 minutes. That should be enough to bring the implied Soot Load down to acceptable levels.

If you get the warning that you have then it may clear enough if you drive at moderate speed for a long time avoiding heavy acceleration but enough to get the Exhaust temperature high enough. Driving around town does not get the Exhaust temperature very high. If not then you need to take it to a dealer.

For info, I have just found out that Dealerships can do a Static Regeneration provided that the GPF is not too clogged up. Hopefully FORScan will add the same Service Procedure for these cars soon.

When you do get the car back it would be a good Idea to give it a good run every week or two as per the instructions in the Handbook to save the problem reoccurring.

Thanks Tizer, I used to have a Ford Eco Sport (Deisel) but when I wanted to change the salesman said to go for petrol and I'd never have a problem. Still, I've booked it in for tomorrow morning.

Had my car done yesterday. Took it in at 8am and they rang me at 5pm to say it was ready. Don't know what took so long. But it is running better now.

The big issue is that if you are only doing short journeys (like I do) it will just keep happening.  If I would have been told at the time that the car would need to be taken on long runs every week then I would never have purchased it.  I sold a diesel car because I didn't want the worry of a DPF being clogged and now I have to put up with this.

Absolutely. I was told that the Ford Eco sport I had was diesel and that was the reason for the DPF clogging all the while. The dealership said it wouldn't happen with a petrol car. Only six months old and it's already clogged up. "Run it up and down a motorway at full speed for about 30 minutes" the dealer told me. The price of fuel these days, who's going to do that?

GPF's are a fairly modern thing.  Only been fitted to the 1.0EB for about 3 years.  The salesman probably wasn't aware of them.  You really have to do your own homework on cars these days, salesmen & women can't be trusted in my experience.

Certainly a problem I've found over the years, and it seems to be worse now.

Sales staff don't really seem to know the product (in fairness, there's a lot more to know than in the days of Mk 1 Escorts). They also have a lot more stuff to go through paperwork/compliance wise and of course they are targeted on selling more than just a car. In fact, I think the car is just incidental to the other stuff now, it could just as well be a fridge or tv.

I've been doing the rounds of dealers the last couple of weeks and they all seem to have the same script - finance plans, paint protection, GAP insurance, blah, blah, even verifying your driving licence felt like I'd applied for a job at GCHQ rather than just a test drive.

I always have a good look at the detailed specs on manufacturers websites before visiting a dealership, as well as a few forums like this.

(It still doesn't always work - the stuff on wetbelts etc that now fills hundreds of threads started appearing just after  I'd ordered mine!)
