Mk4 focus ST suspension

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I’ve bought a low mile 2020 petrol focus ST, it’s a cracking little car but i feel the suspension is too firm, even in normal mode. It’s fine on a smooth surface but let’s face it there are few of those in this country.

Is there a spring kit to soften this?

Before all the razzing starts, I’ve owned numerous high performance saloons none of which were as hard in the normal setting, so be kind I’m just looking to soften it a bit to be more drivable in my eyes. It would still be very firm in sport or race.

Anyone found this to be the case too and fixed it?

Does your have the adaptive dampers?

Mines much more comfortable than previous STs in normal mode.

But in short. No nothing to soften the springs.  It’s a hot hatch.

Maybe double check there are no chocks in the springs. But I doubt it on a 2 year old car.

Thanks Alex, I know what the car is, just a simple question on whether the ride can be softened a bit that’s all. It has the adaptive dampers (it’s fitted with the performance pack). Cracking wee car, in fact I think it’s a good sleeper car (that’s why I bought it) but the suspension, for me, is it’s weak spot. Overly firm for the model. As i said on good surfaces it cruises well but I’d never have it in sport or race, far to stiff and crashes over small bumps. Love everything else about it, discreet, excellent grunt once rolling (not so good off the line), lovely Ricaro seats, adaptive cruise, etc. I didn’t buy an RS as they are too “boy racer” for me. Great cars I’m just past that phase is all 😉

Not a deal breaker just wondering if I can make it better to drive (for me).

Only my opinion and I’m sure many think it’s great.

Is it still on PS4S?

It’s all relative I find. I’ve driven Fiesta STs and this feels like a limo with the adaptive dampers in comparison. I got rid of my mk8 fiesta st because I found it too stiff.

I enjoy using sport mode on all but the roughest roads, that too makes normal mode feel like a rolls.

I find I adapt a bit. If I drive a wallowy SUV then mine feels really stiff.

Maybe just give it some time. But if you are regularly driving something else that’s softer it’s probably always going to feel stiff.

It is on the PS4S which are the best tyres, I had these on my F80 M3 and a couple of other cars.

I get what you mean, we also have a puma first edition 155 which is of course much softer suspension wise. Maybe I’ll just live with it but I’ll ask my ford mechanic if he has any ideas. I just feel they have missed the sweet spot with it and a wee tweak could transform the car.

Appreciate your comments Alex.

I expect you already have, but make sure the tyre pressures are at the lowest end of the range quoted in the manual, i.e. pressures for when there is one driver and no luggage, and not the pressures for a fully loaded car.

It tends to be 35 in all scenarios for the ST iirc. But worth checking they are not up too high.

Thanks guys I’ll check them, I think they are at 37.
