Ford Focus 2 Draining Battery / What is this noise from the central console?

Featured Replies

Hello, so I have a ford focus 2 1.8 duratec from 2007 and I measured the battery in series with a multimeter and it drains 2 Amps when the car is off. Everytime I touch the terminals with the multimeter leads a weird low humming sound comes from around the central console and it stays on and I cannot identify what it is.

Here are the sounds, first is the sound when I put the battery in series with the multimeter, the second one is when I put the key on on position.

What can it be? And how can I get to the bottom of the battery draining problem ?

Thank you

You can not test the current drain the way you are using the meter. Every time you connect up you are causing all modules to go through the wake-up and reboot sequence.

Connect up the meter and leave it connected for at least 30 minutes. Do not touch anything on the car, or open/close doors or the bonnet otherwise the whole wake-up process will start again.

After 30 minutes have a look at the meter and see what the current has finally settled at.

Well the thing is, when I touch the battery negative cable and negative terminal that sound keeps on going until it gets my battery drained, it doesnt stop.

I can't see the video.  When you say centre console, do you mean the part with the handbrake or the part with the radio?

Radio

Radio

I'd pull the radio out and unplug it myself.  Easiest thing to check first.

Then if the noise is still there unplug each switch individually (heated windows, heated seats, hazards, etc).

If you've got electronic climate control that can be unplugged as well.

I have listened to that sound multiple times now, and it sounds very like a CD being loaded then 'sticking' - if you ain't got a CD, I'm out LOL

The simplest way of diagnosing something like that is to have a look at the Fuse specification charts, take a photo of the Fuse boxes for reference and make an Intelligent guess at what ones are for anything in the vicinity of what is making the noise and remove some of them to see if the noise goes away.

If the noise and Current drain does go away then put the Fuses back on at a time until you find the culprit.

Most of the Fuses for anything behind the Dashboard will probably be in the passenger compartment box although there may be some in the Engine compartment box, especially if you have a Supplemental Heater.

I would start with the Audio unit as previously mentioned and the HVAC ones.
