Focus Estate drivers window issue! Need advice

Featured Replies

Hi... I am new to this forum as I am beginning to despair!

My Focus (mk3 - 2011) estate drivers side front window stopped worked about 3 months ago and was stuck in the open position. Next morning, working again. A few days later stopped working again and was a bit intermittent for a couple of weeks and then about 6-8 weeks ago, finally stopped working at all. Been meaning to get it sorted and checked out tutorials and sourced a new motor. I can hear the relay clicking when i activate the switch so I assumed (after a bit of research) that the motor was the fault. So, sourced a part, was going to tackle it this weekend and this morning - it's working again!

I can only assume that it will stop working again soon - am I on the right track? Changing the motor seems a bit of a faff but happy to do if I know it is the fault. I took a multimeter to the switch and it seems fine. The passenger window works fine. Any advice would be most welcome!

Thanks

Does the motor move fast & smooth when it does work?  If so, I'd suspect a loose wiring connection somewhere, rather than a motor fault.

Yes, absolutely normal speed and without any excessive noise or anything. I think I might have to strip the door card off so I can check the wiring and power to the motor etc. It's stumping me to be honest...

If all the plugs are tight and you're getting voltage at the motor, I'd give the door>chassis loom a shake to see if that breaks & makes the circuit.  Most likely point for a wire break where the door is bending it.

Will give that a whirl. Thank you for the advice!

Hi... me again! So after 3 months of my drivers side window not working and me just about to buy a new motor and regulator on ebay to replace it, today it started working again! Damn thing... no grinding in the motor, same speed up and down as the passenger side, one touch down working as well. It's as if it had never stopped working.

Can I ask - what should I check? I am assuming now that the issue is not the motor or regulator - leads me to the switch or the wiring.

I will remove the door card and check the plug is seated properly in the motor, and will check for damage along the way. Is there anything else I can do? I did a basic continuity check on the switch which seemed ok but I don't know how thorough I was? Can anyone offer advice on pin layout? It's front electric only, drivers side one touch down (not up).

Any advice would be most welcome - when it wasn't working I did give the wiring from the chassis to the door a wiggle but this didn't make any difference. When I get the door card off I will check that I am getting 12v to the motor as well. Anything else I can check?
