Swap centre console cigarette lighter for us socket

Featured Replies

Hello everyone!

Glad to be here - this is my first question so i hope I have done it in the right way , sorry if I haven't.

Just bought a mk 2.5 Focus 59 plate 1.8 TDCI titanium for my wife and the cigarette lighter is broken. It does work but needs replacing, so i am hoping to swap it for a dedicated 12v usb socket instead.

Looked through the forums and the threads don't seem to have any pictures or accessible PDF guides (maybe because I am new to the forums?) but all i want to know is how to remove the trim that the cigarette lighter is set in in order to get to the back of it to secure the new usb socket.

Could someone please advise or point me in the right direction? Googling it doesn't seem to bring any results in how to remove this trim either, as i didn't want to be wasting people's time on here if it was an easy search.

many thanks

Scott

That's good to hear that it's easy - how did you get to the back of it to do the swap?

you can do it through the gear gaiter . take it off and you can get under to tighten the nut hth

On my Mk2, the original 12v socket was live permanently, a totally stupid idea and I've no idea what kind of boffin though that was OK! I installed a total separate 12v socket that was fed by the 'ACC' fuse so it was only live when you were in the car and turned the key. As stated above, that LED surrounding the twin USB will draw little current, but being on 24/7, will give you issues.

I must admit I'm not sure why your were concerned that it would run the battery flat but there's no harm in disconnecting it if you feel happier. 👍

A standard little LED as used to show the socket is on takes approximately 6mA and a typical car battery has a rating of 65Ah (65000mAh) so it would take 10,800 hours (451 days) to run the battery totally flat.

I bought one of those 12v solar chargers back in summer.  It's got an annoying blue LED that flashes constantly in daylight.  Seems completely unnecessary.  Given the small amount of power that the panel must produce, I have wondered just how much is being wasted by the LED!

Was quite surprised to see that the Golf not only unlocked, but even started and ran fine after not having been touched for about 4 months.  So the panel must be doing something...  The Focus has been left for about the amount of time and won't even unlock. (Still need to try and open it manually at some point!)
