Spam? text message regarding 5G

Featured Replies

My Mrs received a text message purporting to be from Tesco Mobile and telling her 5G was ready to be installed and she should click on the link to complete the process.

Pretty sure it's a scam (probably to plant a bot and hijack contact list or similar), as both myself and her brother are with the same provider and we didn't get a message. None of us has a 5G capable phone anyway (ours are so old they're probably 1G!😀).

Fortunately Mrs remembered not to click on anything suspicious and we've deleted the suspect message and run a scan on her phone which seems "clean".

So just a heads up to anyone who might get something similar.

I'd maybe rethink that 🤣

Curses! That damned autocorrect strikes again!😀 Corrected.

I think most networks are now 3g minimum, as i fancied a Motorola Razr can pick up for peanuts now, something small to slip in my pocket when going out.

I believe UK 3G phase out is 2033 at the latest, some networks e.g. Vodafone and EE, are phasing it out next year.

This could be why we got the spam about 5G.

Also means I can only get another 10 or 11 years at most out of the ancient "dumb" Nokia I keep in the glovebox for emergencies!

Mrs Turvey got the same message today, but she also doesn't have a 5g phone so didn't bother. Pretty sure it'll be legit though 😉

Just checked, the message was received on a number used by Tesco in the past so looks to me to be ok.

Hope so, Kevin. Just something about it didn't look right to me. Forgot to add that she got another one about the same time also from Tesco(?) saying they had reconfigured her phone, and she should switch off and restart - did Mrs T get that?

Yes, she did. She had switched off her phone anyway as we were on a plane! 😀
