2012 Focus key fob

Featured Replies

Hi, I've recently had my key fob tested and the battery replaced, and was told there are no issues with the fob. The problem is that the key fob only works intermittently, and sometimes needs to be pressed three or four times for both locking and opening. I've done the ignition reset and still no joy. Does anyone know where the fob lock receiver is in a 2012 focus, and can anything be done with it. Cheers

I never knew a fob could be tested - how was that done? Was the battery definitely confirmed as pushing out 3.3v?

I didn't see the fob being tested, I guess its like a frequency scanner or something like that. I asked if the housing should be replaced and I was told there were no problems with the housing.

Have you got another remote ?

and if the answer is no, then it would be a good idea to invest in one before you are left without a working key.

Yep, official ford tool for checking remotes. Flashing lights of various amounts depending on remote and battery condition. Or tune a radio to am and try remote , crackle and it's working. 🤣🤣

I thought that with my car, it just comes with a 'fob', and another standard key so being a belt & braces guy, wanted to get a spare 'fob'.On going to a KeySmith, I was quoted in excess of £200 for one. I have managed ever since with the one fob and a key LOL

I've managed 4 years with just one key on the Golf.  Previous write off so who knows where the other key might be!

Anyway, I was quoted about £150 for a spare in 2018.  Needless to say I just decided to manage with one as well lol.

I have another key that has been programed to start the car and open the doors, but it's not a fob

So the other remote key (not a fob) locks and unlocks the doors without any problems, that's if I understand you correctly.

If that is the case then you can rule out any possible fault with the car, and the issue is firmly with your old keyfob. It quite possibly has a bit of a stick button, open the case up and give the button switches a little spray with contact cleaner. The other possibility is you have a dry solder joint of one of the components in the keyfob.

I think the other one is just a solid key blade with immob chip.  No buttons for remote function.

🤔 🤔 not sure.

If that's the case, I too have exactly the same thing, an originally supplied, 'spare key'

Yeah, that was standard on the Mk2, even the top spec Titanium!  Couldn't believe it when I spent £6k on the newest car I'd ever bought for it to come with only one remote fob and a solid spare.  My 90's 306s came with 3 remote fobs!!

I'm not sure what the basic Mk3s came with though.  I've only had Mk3 Titanium's which were keyless start so had to have radio immobiliser fobs (2 supplied).  Pretty sure the Mk3 Zetec got keyed ignition so wouldn't 'need' 2 remote fobs and could still have the old Mk2 setup of one remote and one solid.

(Edit - Just checked a few on ETIS.  Mk3 basic models came with 2 remote flip key fobs originally. )

  •  Ignition Flip Key With Remote Unit
  •  With Second Remote Ign Flip Key

It's a spare key that was programmed to start the car. I saw a guy on YouTube who purchased a new fob housing and swapped the key and electronics into the new fob. I might give it a go. Thanks for all the replies 👍

The car only came with one fob, so the garage called a mobile locksmith to cut and program a spare without fob (cheapskate)😁

So the spare key does not lock/unlock the doors - without actually using the metal key blade in the door lock.

It is just a dumb key with a transponder chip for the immobiliser.
