Insurance not checked when renewing VED

Featured Replies

I found this interesting - just had my VED reminder and discovered that insurance is no longer checked when renewing VED.

The only reason I can think of is that someone in charge at the dept. for transport thinks that some people were put off paying their VED (maybe £30 - £230) because they'd first have to pay for insurance (£250 - £500) so are now less likely to evade their VED. Don't know.  It's not what I would have done, given that insurance used to be checked within about 5 seconds...... but I'm not in charge.

I thought it was MOT that's checked before you can buy VED?

In NI, you need both, an MOT AND a valid insurance certificate. 😢

I've got my reminder letter here, just says if going to a post office the you need the MOT certificate (and insurance if in NI).

It does also mention that by law all drivers must be covered by motor insurance when using a vehicle on the road.

Yes, funny that, I normally try to support my local PO by doing it there, and accordingly took the paperwork with me.

The Sub-Postmaster tells me he doesn't understand why they still ask that, as the system won't let him complete the process unless it knows you have insurance (and MOT if appropriate) just as it does if you do it online yourself.
