Mechanic refuses to work on Auto Gearbox?

Featured Replies

Left my car in to get the Auto Gearbox oil changed but then few hours later got a call from the mechanic He said he'd done a bit of research and decided it was too risky to change- he said there's a gearbox pump in the gearbox sump and after the oil is changed if the pump fails the car won't start - it all sound very suspicious to me When I returned to collect the car the bonnet was open and the engine was running- why? I believe they may have started the job found a different problem and stopped. I was half expecting the gearbox to brake on the way home but it felt fine. I don't think changing auto gear oil is a big job should I be worried? I've decided i m just going to leave the oil that's in it and whatever happens happens

Hats of to the mechanic in my book. He/they could have easily told you it had been changed ( if it needs changing?) and charged you a small fortune for the pleasure and you would be non the wiser and no doubt £££'s out of pocket.

as long as it a good colour, usually cherry red and has no smell of burning it will be fine. Possibly didnt want to scare you with the price of the ATF.

It all depends what transmission is fitted to your vehicle.

Only the "wet clutch" Getrag Powershift 6DCT450 needs an oil and filter change (filter is external of the box) every 3 years or 37,500 miles whichever occurs first.

All other auto transmissions, including the "dry clutch" Getrag Powershift 6DCT250, officially do NOT need any servicing
