Car is here but not registered as system shows it hasn't been 'delivered to the dealer'

Featured Replies

I have a personal lease for a Ford Focus ST line. It was ordered in Feb 22 and was finally delivered to my home Thurs 17th Nov 22. Yay! BUT then my lease company rings me on the Friday to tell me that they've been unable to tax the car as it has NOT been marked as 'delivered to dealer'. They've told me I'm not allowed to drive it until its sorted which could take up to a week! They say it's a 'glitch' in the (Ford?) system. I've checked Ford etis with the reg number and VIN and it's not listing my car. As the car isn't taxed, am I right in saying that the person who drove it 200 miles to drop it off drove it illegally, I inadvertently drove it illegally, and it's sat on my driveway not SORN so illegal?

Has anyone ever come across this? What should be done so I'm allowed to drive my lease car?

Thanks

Can't be illegally parked if it's not registered...  I'd be more worried about whether it's technically insured at the moment.

It should have been delivered on trade plates.  Mine was.  Then it was registered after that, although it was done within a few hours in my case.

It definitely wasn't delivered on trade plates. I arranged insurance on the car before delivery telling them the make and model etc. as the reg number wasn't bringing up its details. They said that was normal as it was a brand new car.

I'm wondering what can be done to force the (Ford?) system to update so the lease company can tax the car so that I'm allowed to drive it?

Nothing as far as I know.  There was a similar issue a few months ago where the Ford systems weren't updating or allowing new registrations.  People just had to wait until it was fixed.

Ok. Thanks for replying.

Surely if it's not registed it will not have any number plates so it shouldn't be on the road anyway.

I think the dealer allocates the number from a range they have already been given by the DVLA so they can then make the plates and register the car.

Yep, as above, they can be assigned number plates at any time.  You could argue they're jumping the gun a bit making plates before registration is complete but it seems to be common practice.

I ended up with a different plate myself as the delays took it over the March 1st plate change.

I got a cracking deal on one of my motorbikes on a take it and pay for it now basis. I didn't want it actually registering until 1 January so it sat in my garage for a couple of months, complete with numberplates, until then.

Edit: Autocorrect strikes again - that should read numberplate 'cos there's only the rear on a bike!😀
