Focus Main Beam Direction

Featured Replies

Just sorted out a condensation issue on o/s front headlight in my 2011 Focus. Checking that all lights working against garage door, dipped beams are OK but main beam is about six inches higher than n/s and to the right of centre (n/s centre-ish).

Now this something I've never considered or noticed before. Should both main beams be more or less of the same height/direction as each other.

I thought the beam direction was a 'pre-set' on the reflector but if I didn't put the bulb back squarely (holder is home solidly) would this cause this effect - or is it normal?

If your headlight uses a dual element single lamp for the dipped and high beam  then there is no separate adjustment for the high beam.

It is normal that on high beam that the nearside headlight would be set to illuminate the kerb and the offside would reach further ahead and be aimed just left of the centre line of the road.

A 2011 Focus is likely to be a Mk2.5 and if so will have separate main and dip bulbs. I'm not home at the mo so can't check but I think it'll be a H1 for main and H7 for dip. The H7 has a black cap to prevent the filament from being seen directly by oncoming drivers.

Either way, as Unofix says, there is no separate adjustment for main and dip so you're relying on the bulb being correctly fitted in the housing and the filament being correctly positioned in relation to the bulb flange. It might be worth trying a new main bulb in case it's a badly made one, or swapping the two mains to see if the problem follows the swap.

Thanks unofix and mjt, the beam is way off centre line so looks like the assembly coming out again tomorrow😒.

The bulb is not seated correctly
