2009 Ford Focus non start / engine Malfunction warning and rapid immobiliser flicker

Featured Replies

Good Evening Guys / Girl,

Jaguar Land Rover Technician here, but have a friends Ford Focus currently broken down on our local pub car park.

Haven’t looked at it yet, but symptoms are as above. Engine Malfunction light on with fault tone and rapid flicker immobiliser.

NON start with no attempt to crank. No checks have been done yet.

I plan on obtaining second key to test. All the standard battery voltage etc to be checked

I have no wiring diagrams, but the can network will obviously go through the IP. So plan on testing the resistance at the diag plug across can High/ low.

Obviously I have no fault codes yet, but any common issues that will fix the motor would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve read the IP pack solder joints can cause a lot of wonderful issues. I’ve also read there is a 5amp fuse in the EJB for the immobiliser can I have that confirmed

Thanks Dan

Evening Dan,

Let's confirm details of the car since your profile is all about a puma 🤣

So you have a friends FOCUS 2009

Petrol / diesel ?      Exact engine if possible ?

Immobiliser LED will be flashing a code - what is the sequence that it is flashing ?

Engine will not crank while the immobiliser is active. Do not attempt to jump start !

Have you got a laptop and a good ELM327(modified) lead to connect to the OBDII port ? If so down load the free Ford diagnostic software FORScan, general purpose code scanners don't read Ford DTC's very well.

FORScan: https://forscan.org/download.html

Thump the top of the dash/cluster and it will probably start.

Dan, got a friend's Jag xf 2013 and that's got same issue , immobiliser fault out of the blue.  Any suggestions where to start?

And that's another issue I'm not even going to look at. 🤣🤣

So vehicle is a 2009 Ford Focus 2.0 tdi

As I stated I’m going to volt drop the battery to confirm it’s good, I know it’s an immobiliser, but sticking a boost pack over the the battery will not damage the car in anyway.

The Red light flickers rapid not in a sequence. I have a snap ethos plus and an IDS so I can scan the car. Just looking for common faults as other than my classic Ford’s I’ve never looked at a immobiliser issue on a mk2 focus.

with it being an immobiliser fault why would engine make a difference. They both use the same bcm, ejb, key transponder and IP. The only thing different would be the pcm.

Ian, I would be looking at the RFA on the XF. Secondly have you confirmed the key? Keys are common. So do I press the dash smack bang in the middle by the immobiliser light?

2009 Focus a prime candidate for the IP solder issue or plug connections at the BCM behind the glove box . U1900 dtc code can be present.

As said above, a whack on the dash can shock a failing cluster back to life temporarily.

Do the BCM connectors corrode at the green connectors at the rear of the BCM?

My son’s 2008 ST was the IP. Have only read posts about the two plugs at the BCM/fuse box having damp corrosion.

Also possibilty of being dislodged by a passenger foot, I don’t know how though.

I had to get one running temporarily to get it to auctions and removed cluster and a light spray of wd40 on the circuit board did the trick enough to get it gone. 🤣🤣🤣

Thanks, tried the spare key to no avail. Not that interested at fixing it as I doubt I will get paid to fix it.( Daughters boyfriend)

So I’ve been down to the car the immobiliser light blinks as it should until key on. Then the light stays illuminated red for around 2 second before blinking probably every 0.5 seconds continuously. I’m guessing that means not recognised rather than a reason for it not to recognise the key.

I saw a video on you tube where the key wasn’t recognised because of a blown fuse but this red light is blinking probably double that

You have to wait for a minute or slightly more and the rapid flashing will change to a coded flash. For example code 31 on a diesel engine indicates a communication issue with the fuel pump.

I’ll have a count tomorrow. Once I’ve got DTC’s il have something to work with. I’ve been to busy today to work on It.
