Garage wants £500 to fix this

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, my friend has a Ford Tourneo Custom 2018 with 59k mileage. He just passed his MOT with one amber advisory: "Dpf matter sensor wiring chewed, requiring new sensor". The garage said that the wiring could have been chewed by a rat and that it would cost nearly £500 to get it fixed. A week after the MOT, he's started getting an Engine Malfunction light on the dashboard. I find this really strange as he's never had this issue.

As I have vLinker FS I offered to scan his van for errors.

On the first run the following errors were shown:

PCM P246B:00-2F

PCM P2463:00-AC

PCM P24B0:00-E8

OBDII P2463-P

OBDII P24B0-C

APIM U2013:17-0A

After the reset only one error was shown:

PCM P246B:00-2F

Could someone please explain what it means? As far as I could find Online and on this forum it is to do with DPF, but does it really cost £500 to fix or is the garage trying to rip off my mate?

He's possibly having a mid life crises 🤣

Best book him an appointment with Dr. Auto Electrician

Failed to regen. You would do better by looking at the chewed wires and see if they can be repaired.

For someone with no experience at car repairing how difficult would you say is to repair that wire? I did manage to replace an ABS sensor on my S-Max, but that was basically following step by step instructions on a video. I'm guessing this is a more difficult job.

Well you would need probably some connectors and crimping pliers, or soldering iron and solder, insulation tape.

If you have no experience in joining wires I would leave well alone then. £500 seems a bit steep depending on what wires have been chewed and how close to the connector or sensor.

Other possibility is to use some heat shrink butt connectors, especially if the chewed wiring is exposed to the elements, but you will need a crimp tool and a heat gun.  An auto electrician is probably your best bet if you are not geared up to do this sort of thing.

Sounds like it's out of my league so I will get my friend to visit the garage. What a rip off.

Thank you to everyone who responded.

Im pretty sure your friend hasnt got the full story, no garage is going to charge £500 to soldier a few wires. Maybe ring them yourself and ask what they are going to do

I guess that rather than repairing the wires they were maybe going to replace the sensor with the att’d wiring of replace part of the loom. These days repairing something does not enter into peoples heads, or does not fit their business model of maxing income, they just want to replace the part. If we had a photo of the damaged wiring it would be easier to comment but I appreciate it’s probably difficult to do without jacking up
