Will decent independant garages use the right spec engine oil or just put in whatever they have got in.

Featured Replies

Might be a dumb question but idk how it works. Do garages order the oil in specifically for your car or will they just use whatever they have got. I know ecoboost 1.0 only takes ford spec 5w-20 but if a garage is not specifically aware of this may they just put any 5w-20 that they have in or do they usually look it up properly first? Im thinking of just taking an oil change to evan halshaw ford as I assume theres more chance they will use the ford stuff.

A decent garage will order what the car needs including filters etc.

I use Formula 1 autocentres to service mine

A dodgy garage or a Ford dealer will wipe the oil filter with a rag, take a video of your brake pads and go and fetch the sandwiches in it

I'm probably, ever so slightly, exaggerating about that, but prove me wrong😃🙃😉

It depends on the garage...  I worked at one main dealer where the oil was on draught!  Pumped it in from a pipe on the wall and there was even a display to show how many litres you'd put in.

Of course, that really limited the oil choice, there were only 2 grades available on tap there.  (Remember when pretty much everything was 10w40? )

Most indy garages will have an aftermarket supplier, who may supply the Ford stuff, or may just supply any 5w20, you'd really have to ask each place individually.

Yep, I guess the answer is in the title - a decent garage should, the tricky bit is finding one with a good reputation, but asking around your neighbours, and dropping into the garage for a quick chat and asking a few questions is as good a way as any.

The one I use for the Mrs's car, for instance, has been going for years, advertises in the Parish magazine and is used by loads of locals so the word would soon get out of they weren't doing things right.

Yeah I got a couple I know with a good repuation. I just didnt know weather the engine needing a certain spec oil rarther than just the viscosity was the norm or not so they may not know about it

Nothing stopping you buying the oil yourself and providing to the garage of your choice.

I could, though I thought this may seem a bit rude , a bit like "here I dont trust you so use this oil that I bought" I also assume they can get the oil for cheaper although I may be wrong about that,.

Oh, they probably can, but what they buy it for and what they charge you on the bill may differ!😀

More than likely not. If you want certainty then its DIY 😄

At one garage I worked for it was 15w30 bulk whatever brand in the car regardless of car engine requirements. If someone brought there oil in, more often than not it was forgotten about until too late. The can of oil went in the toolbox/ cupboard until required in there own cars or cars they did at home. I will say I didn't lower myself to that practice.

No wonder alot of 1.0 ecoboots seem to fail with their apparent tight tolerences for different oil. I assume theres a lot of normal car owners that  just take their cars for a service assuming the garage knows what they are doing and thinks nothing more of it.  People are entierly at the mercy of whatever the garage decides to do/forgets to do on the day lol

The garage knows exactly what they are doing. It's just most times not what you wanted them to do.

My 1.8 Focus 2 diesel had a full ford service history when I bought it at 70,000, Always at the same garage. I did a couple of oil changes using genuine Ford oil and filters. The third oil change I did I bought the oil from my Ford dealer. From memory it was branded Lion. The container was different so I inquired why. They said that is what they are using now. Ok I thought. (I think you know where this is going) 2000 miles later the engine let go. Had it rebuilt and the engine builder reckoned the change of oil could have been the cause. Detergents loosening deposits were mentioned.

They recommended Valvoline oil which I used and changed it every 6000 miles. My Mate now owns the car and its pushing 140k . My advice is diy and use Valvoline oil. Opie oils are great to deal with.

I am using Valvoline in my 2.0 now. Changing it every 6000 miles.
