Snapped auxiliary belt

Featured Replies

Hello new hear I have a 2005 transit connect 1.8 diesel  .

My question is tonight there was a high pitch metal squeal followed by smoke and a burning rubber smell turned the van off only to find I think the auxiliary belt has snapped. Is it fixable or is the van knackered?

If you are just talking about the belt that drives the water pump, alternator, Air-Con then it would normally be a very quick and cheap fix. BUT ........ the squeal and burning rubber would suggest that something has seized up, causing the belt to snap. Still should be an easy fix, but depending on what's broken it will range from around £100 for a new water pump, £160 for a new alternator, £400 for AC compressor

I have had this happen twice.  A). Once was the pulley on the tensioner jammed, bearing breaking up it seems.   B) Once was aircon pump jammed.     With A I replaced the tensioner,   With B I put a shorter belt on to bypass aircon pump - fiesta diesel , not identical to yours ( depending on exact layout it might not be possible)
