Recommendations for my tuned 1.6TDCi engine..

Featured Replies

Hello. I'm here to get some advice from anyone who might know about the 1.6TDCi EcoNetic engine (NGDA engine code) with the charge cooler. Long story short, I have tuned my engine from stock bhp to ~180bhp with 450Nm torque. I've made my existing turbo (GTC1244VZ) a hybrid and now pushes ~1.8bar (2.3 is the test limit). I've installed an intercooler (280bhp capacity) and I've plugged off electronically and physically my EGR, de-cat and de-dpf with a straight pipe, no downpipe tho and I'm fairly happy with the results. Engine's condition is pretty amazing, my mechanics compared it to around 80,000kms of daily use despite me having 182,000kms on my dash (and I started the mods 2,000kms before).

So, my questions now are:

  1. Do I need to install an oil catch can? Is it even worth it in the long run? I've always had "oil" in my intake system but I've seen a slight increase of oil/gunk in my system due to the mods. When I went to clean a hose that was a a bit loose, I saw some oil/gunk and it felt like a hand moisturizer, pretty thick to be something from just oil vapors/blowby from the PCV system but I know for a fact that I'm not leaking any oil in my intake and even if I did, oil isn't that thick anyways.. so that's that.
  2. Do I have to change the type of oil that I use? Instead of the regular 5W-30 that I put, do I need to go any thicker or something else keeping in mind that my car now has the aforementioned millage and seems to be putting off blowby/PCV gases?
  3. If let's say I don't want to install an oil catch can, should I run a hose off the PCV outlet to the ground with a small filter attached at the end of it and close off the intake inlet? Is it a bad idea? Will it perhaps make the PCV's job more difficult as it will run without any vacuum from the turbo, I guess the same issue will be present with a catch can as the PCV now has a barrier it has to push gases through?

Give me your thoughts and ask me any questions! I'll be more than happy to answer!

P.S. Here's my engine bay.
