Coolant leak

Featured Replies

Hi, my mark 3.5 Ford Focus 1.5lt ecoboost is losing engine coolant via the exhaust, I’m thinking a possible head gasket but, I’d like to know if there are other causes before I begin stripping the engine down - your thoughts please

Well, as I already more or less wrote in your earlier post a cracked cylinder liner is more likely than a broken head gasket.

Just remove the cylinder head and you know whether the engine block is salvageable or not.

Could be EGR related, a leak could cause the symptoms you detail.

Leave it overnight, plugs out borescope in and see if any cylinder has accumulated any water.

Also check the carbon build up, compare all cylinders and see if any have been steamed clean.

If all look clean, then it could be EGR related, leaking coolant into ALL cylinders.

If one looks cleaner or has a water deposit overnight, drop that cylinder and observe to see if you can see where the coolant is ingressing. May need a borescope that can be connected to a laptop and record the cylinder over a few hours.

Could also be cracked exhaust manifold, if this size engine has water cooled exhaust manifold.

Good luck.

There is no EGR on a 1.5 ECOboost.
