Left headlight flickers and dies when turning left

Featured Replies

Hi all, sorry if this is posted in the wrong area, hopefully someone will point me in the right direction if needs be.

I have a 2017 Focus Titanium with headlights that turn when I corner. When I start the engine both headlights are working but at some point when I turn left (usually when I'm turning around from my house) my left headlights will flicker and die. If I turn off the engine and start it up again it'll work fine until I turn left again.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas as my local Ford garage want to charge £138 just to diagnose the issue. My gut feeling is that a connection is breaking on that side as the headlights turns but I'll hold my hands up, I know nothing about cars!

Thanks in advance!

Hi Alex, do you have a multimeter, some tools and a laptop ?

Does your car have front fog lights, and are they configured to act also as cornering lights ?

Check that the bulbs are connected properly and that the main headlamp connector is connected properly first.

Then, maybe swap the bulbs over from left to right, if the fault swaps to the right side then you know it's the bulb going down, if not, then I'm afraid it's the HCM that is faulty

I have a laptop, that's it...can ask around for a multimeter.

It's got front facing fog lights, I *think* they act as cornering lights also.

I'll give it a shot when I'm off next, cheers 👍

No cornering fogs on MK3.5 it's a separate H1 bulb in the headlamp

Because the Focus Mk3.5 runs from 2015 until mid 2018 when it was replaced by the Mk4

"MK" (Mark) is like the version number.

"Titanium" just relates to a specific variant/level of internal/external appearance and feature set and such, aka the "trim level".

So far the focus has gone through four major revisions, Mk1 (1998-2004), Mk2 (2005-2011), Mk3 (2011-2018) and Mk4 (2018-present).

Sometimes there's also a mid-life minor revision, which is what I believe the ".5" refers to. For instance in 2008 we got a such a refresh to the Mk2, commonly referred to as the "mk2 with facelift", or Mk2.5 for short, easily distinguishable in particular from the different headlight design.

In 2015 there was a similar "mid-life facelift" refresh to the Mk3, so as unofix says, your 2017 must be a Mk3.5 (Mk3 with facelift).

Focus Mk4.5 was launched in 2022

Because you put all of the relevant information in your post AND in your profile.

Titanium X had Xenon Headlamps, which are controlled by a separate module (HCM), you have three light units per light:

Main Xenon Unit (domed)

High beam (central)

Cornering Light (Far inboard, bulb facing outboard)

The High Beam and Cornering lights are just normal H1 bulbs
