Wet inside in Ford Focus

Featured Replies

I bought a 60 plate Ford Focus with very low mileage that had been garaged from new. Having to now keep it outside it is now suffering from water getting into the inside. Three garages have looked all have come up with some idea and tried to fix it but without success, just more bills. Has anybody any information if Ford Focus has a weak point or poor seals that could be letting water in. i.e whereabouts of any possible blocked drain channels, poor rubber seals etc.

Is it a late Mk2 or an early Mk3?

What solutions have already been attempted?

If Mk3, chances are it's the rear bumper vents or the door seals.

Thanks for replying Tom. Not sure if Mk 2 or Mk 3 , 60 plate right on the change over.  Had smoke tests done to see any escape to prove where the water was getting in - without success.  Rear window seals changed as the garage said Ford gave him that hint - still leaking. Another garage said he had seen it before and the joint between the bulkhead and floor had split and put silicone seal in - no sign of split but still same result very wet interior.

Sorry Tom car is in a garage 75 miles away trying to keep it dry. My son is taking a photo of it & sending it to me. So if you could just bear with me until it arrives I would be most grateful.

Sorry for the delay Tom. It is the same as the silver Mk 2. Registered Dec 2010 right on the change over. Suffers with large amount of water in the drivers well and the passenger well behind the drivers seat. Nearside seems dry.

Thanks Jim.  I owned a Mk2 for nearly 4 years without a single water leak so can't offer any personal experience here.

I have seen a few boot leaks on the Mk2's.  Spoiler, tail lights and even minor cracks in the roof gulley joint.  However, with yours pooling mainly in the driver footwell, I'd suggest the leak is probably at the front drivers side, and just moving backwards while driving.  So first check would be the windscreen seal and the scuttle panel below the screen.  Make sure the scuttle drains aren't blocked with leaf litter.  Second check would be the door seal and even the door itself.  Rain should be diverted to the outside of the bottom edge of the door, but can leak through the speaker hole if the waterproofing has failed.

I note you say it's only since being outside, so fairly sure it's rain water?  There is also the option of coolant leaking from the heater matrix, air conditioning condensate draining into the car instead of underneath, and I think the rear screenwash pipe is routed up past the drivers door as well.

This post may be worth a look Jim

Pollen filter housing worth checking

leaf litter gets in the massive bucket beneath the front screen and clogs up the drains at either end - the huge (car width) plastic cover around the wiper blades comes off and you can dig out shed loads of detritus stopping any water reaching the road where its supposed to go - instead it fills up and overspills into the interior

at the back the silly bolts holding the tailgate spoiler at the top of the screen allow water inside the tailgate that then spills inside filling the spare wheel well, pop off the trim piece inside at the top of the rear screen, to find 3 bolts and two more on the outer edges...   the fun is when you find the captive nut isn't and you end up half off and unable to go back or forwards - but u must sort to cure the water leak
