I am wondering if it is possible to change your vehicles tax band even if it has not had an emissions reduction. I have a 17 plate fiesta st line and because of the date it was registered i have to pay £165 tax, which i know could be far worse but it’s still a pain in the butt especially when people with the same car and with more horsepower pay less tax. I understand the change the uk government made but it’s just a nuisance for me. Is there anyway for me to request a vehicle tax band change? I don’t understand why the exact same car can be taxed at £0 or £20 whilst mine is a lot more simply because of a date. 

 

You can't change it.

There was a cut-off date for the changeover from emissions based to a flat rate.  April 1st 2017.  Your car was registered after that cut-off date, so is flat rate instead of emissions based.

Just the luck of the draw, I'm afraid. Mine is £165, while my Mrs's older car which actually has a higher emissions figure, is still £20.

When governments change anything, there are always winners and losers. Lots of people have "lost" a lot of money due to changes in state pension rules for example, while some have "gained".
