this may seem like a silly question but, do you need an internet connection to use forscan? i can never get parked anywhere near my house so i cant use my laptop to pick up my wifi signal, thanks

No you don't, at least for the Windows version.

I think the phone versions do a check the first time you use them and maybe once or twice a year to check that the person who is logged into the phone that paid for it is the one using it, so the phone may need a Sim card.

As Tizer has said you don't have to be within range of WiFi in order to do most things with FORScan. If you ever needed to download 'AsBuilt' data then you could always set your mobile phone as a Hotspot and connect the laptop to it.
