Mk2 55 plate Major electrical problem

Featured Replies

Hi all, I have previously had mondeos but jumped to a focus mk2, my thought maybe more reliable,. Anyways had the car a week and have loads of lights on the dash that will not go out,  today I replaced the fuse board as the old one had a bit of corrosion and all the symptoms are still there, right I have airbag light on, brake failure on, seatbelt restraints on, snowflake light on, also  no tel tale lights for indicators, hazards, and high beam, no heated screen front, no stereo, and no ambient air temp on the display just dashes..... but the car runs fine no limp mode no lights flickering. Please help I'm one step closer to killing the car..

Whack the dash above the instrument cluster. If it reacts it could be the solder joints on the cluster circuit board.

Have you checked the GEM for water ingress and corrosion ?

GEM??  Is that the fuse box under the dash.

GEM - General Electrical Module. It is a combined unit with the passenger compartment fusebox and is a basic control computer.

On newer models it has been superseded by the BCM - Body Control Module which also is combined with the passenger compartment fusebox but is a more powerful controller than the GEM.

Both units are very prone to water ingress on many models up until about 2015. Any slight corrosion of the tracks inside the GEM/BCM and/or the connectors leads to many random faults.

What do you mean by "fuse board"?

Sounds like the common cluster solder issue, I'd be checking that first.

But first, get a decent lead and read the codes using FORScan

If you see lots of "lost communications with...." errors and THEFT DETECTED, it's the cluster

Once you've had the cluster done, if it's still there, suspect the GEM (fusebox under glovebox) for water damage

You could try removing the cluster, 10 min job and wiggling the connector.

2 screws and clips.

Yeah sorry I did mean fuse box, I replaced that yesterday with another but all the lights are still on, would I have to clear all those with forscan?

Yes.i did change that as I found some green crud on a couple of connectors

I was under the impression that the fuse box/ gem or BCM would need configuring to the ip and other modules if replaced with another. I may be wrong.

That is very true for BCM's you can't just swap them. To be honest I'm not sure about the GEM on a 2006 Focus, they may not need programming. The OP will need to use FORScan to clear all the DTC's after the change of GEM.

Did the issue start after you changed the GEM? (Fuseboard)

You need to configure the replacement GEM to your vehicle spec

But is that only to reprogram it for the central locking to work?  Well since them the whe cluster has now packed up, the car won't even start, no lights at all....

No, the GEM is configured for all the electrical equipment fitted to your vehicle, if you've put a donor GEM in it will still be configured for the donor vehicle.

Yes, just the remotes are programmed to the GEM, the keys (PATS) is programmed to the cluster

Well today I replaced the ecu, gem module under the dash, cluster, turn signal stalks, ignition barrel with immobiliser,  now the car starts which is good but still have no indicators, and the airbag and srs light are still refusing to go out. Oh and still no tell tale lights for indicators and high beam, anyone got any ideas, all components were from a decent car with no problemz

Have you uploaded your cars "AsBuilt" file to the replacement GEM ?

Where do I get that from

I'm unsure what state your car is going to be in now since you have swapped the GEM and if I understand correctly you have now swapped .............

cluster, turn signal stalks, ignition barrel with immobiliser,

So your car is now a hybrid, it is no longer original, and it is not fully the donor car either.

The "AsBuilt" files can in most cases be automatically download by FORScan direct from Ford. You need to be connected to the car and your laptop must be connected to the internet. At the very bottom of the page of FORScan when you are viewing the GEM will be a small button/tab which is marked "AB"

Thank you for that,  I'm done in now, spent 2 days trying to sort it and it's still the same as it was before I swapped out all the components from another car, can't seem to get the gem function to work in forscan for some reason, well the car runs fine just don't have tell tale lights on the dash for indicators and high beam, still have airbag and srs symbols and no central locking, might just call the scrap man to take it away.
